A. INTRODUCTION Without a sense of urgency, desire loses its value.

Jim Rohn

Since school year 2009-2010, the curriculum for the second year students was altered. The subjects in Math and Science were downloaded to the lower year level. This event resulted to the increase of the load given to the students. From having Intermediate Algebra for Mathematics and Biology for Science, the students took up Trigonometry and Geometry for Mathematics while Chemistry for Science. All in all, they had thirteen subjects. During that school year, the administration also implemented the nontransmutation of grades for the first time. Due to this, the students had a very difficult time adjusting in terms of grades and subjects. The change of such events motivated the group to do this study in the said year level for the school year 2011-2012. Being the first batch to experience these changes firsthand, we thought of how we can help in lessening the burden of the future generations taking on this kind of curriculum by finding what best motivates them to study and how to improve their studying skills through their motivations. The researchers would like to specifically study the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations that affect the academic performance of the second year students of St. Paul College, Pasig for school year 2011-2012. The study would most likely focus on the students class environment, teaching style of their students, intellectual ability and interest in a certain subject. Through this research, both students and teachers will benefit from the study. B. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will benefit both the students and the teachers. The research would let the teachers know what teaching style would be most efficient that would cater to the students. It would also raise the awareness of the effects of the teachers aesthetic appearance. This study also aims to help the students enhance their attitudes towards their teacher and more importantly their enthusiasm towards their academics. The study will aim to know the factors that will pinpoint the reason behind their attitude towards a certain subject. The group will be able to explain the alternatives the teachers can try in reaching out to their students to improve their academic performance. If the group succeed in determining these factors, the results are relayed to students which could be used as a guide to improve their study habits. C. RESEARCH PROBLEM AND OBJECTIVES What intrinsic and extrinsic motivations affect the academic performance of the second year high school students of St. Paul College Pasig for school year 2011-2012? Identify the topmost factors that affect the academic performance of the students. Differentiate a students notifications intrinsically and extrinsically. Implement the results of the study to improve and make better the manner of how the students can cope with the curriculum of the second year. D. SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS The result of the study that will be conducted is not to be expected to apply to every batch that may come. The research is to be done only inside the school grounds so the study cannot be always a basis for other private and public schools. Since also the motivations will be coming from the curriculum they are based now the results will not be applicable for other schools.
