The Macintosh or Mac, is a series of personal computers (PCs) designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc. The first Macintosh was introduced by Apple's then-chairman Steve Jobs on January 24, 1984; it was the first commercially successful personal computer to feature a mouse and a graphical user interface rather than a command-line interface.

The product continued to have success through the second half of the 1980s, primarily because the sales of the Apple II series remained strong even after the introduction of the Macintosh, only to see it dissipate in the 1990s as the personal computer market shifted toward the "Wintel" platform: IBM PC compatible machines running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows. The company got a blow(which they didnt realize at that time) when after losing a power struggle with the board of directors in 1985, Steve Jobs left Apple and founded NeXT, a computer platform development company specializing in the highereducation and business markets.

Microsoft Windows 3.0 gave a heavy competition to the Macintosh operating system in both performance and features when it was released in May 1990 and was a less expensive alternative to the Macintosh platform. Also WINTEL IBM PCs were gaining popularity among consumers and apples market share was losing rapidly.

Apple's response was to introduce a range of relatively inexpensive Macs in October 1990. The Macintosh Classic, essentially a less expensive version of the Macintosh Plus, was the least expensive Mac offered until early 2001. Macintosh LC, and Macintosh II were also introduced with some better features. All three machines sold well although Apple's profit margin on them was considerably lower than that on earlier models. This happened due to the wrong analysis of the company which was mainly oriented on price issues rather than QUALITY.

Despite many technical and commercial successes, Microsoft and Intel began to rapidly lower Apple's market share with the introduction of the Windows 95 operating system and Pentium processors. By 1996, Apple had failed to deliver a new operating system, Copland. CEO Gil Amelio turned to NeXT Computers, and the NeXTSTEP platform became the foundation for the Mac OS X. Steve Jobs returned to Apple as an advisor, and took control of the company as an interim CEO. Jobs brought Apple from near bankruptcy to profitability by 1998 by the restructuring of the company through SIMPLICITY and CHOICES of quality improvement.

In 1998, a year after Steve Jobs had returned to the company, Apple introduced an all-in-one Macintosh called the iMac. This proved to be a sales success and saw the Macintosh brand revitalized. Its translucent plastic case, originally Bondi blue and later many other colors, is considered an industrial design landmark of the late 1990s. The iMac did away with most of Apple's standard (and usually proprietary) connections, such as SCSI and ADB, in favor of two USB ports. This effectively made it the first legacy-free PC. The iMac also had no internal floppy disk drive, and instead included a CD-ROM drive for installing.

The iMac proved to be phenomenally successful, with 800,000 units sold in 139 days making the company an annual profit of US$309 million, Apple's first profitable year since1995. The iMac's "blue and white" aesthetic was applied to the Power Macintosh, and then to a new product, the iBook. Introduced in July 1999, the iBook was Apple's first consumer-level laptop computer, (desktop and portable products for both consumers and professionals).

More than 140,000 preorders were placed before it started shipping in September and by October it was as much a sales hit as the iMac. The company improved the quality of processors tremendously during the millennium. As of 2012, all iMacs use aluminum cases.

Apple discontinued the use of PowerPC microprocessors in 2006. At WWDC 2005, Steve Jobs revealed this transition and also noted that Mac OS X was developed to run on both the Intel and PowerPC architectures from the very beginning. All new Macs now use x86 processors made by Intel, and some Macs were given new names to signify the switch. Since, Intel is one of the only manufacturers of advanced microprocessors in the world, Apples decision to incorporate Intel Microprocessors was a very important step in QUALITY IMROPVEMENT. But, production of the Mac is based on a vertical integration model in that Apple facilitates all aspects of its hardware and creates its own operating system that is pre-installed on all Mac computers assuring best quality and unique technology. This is in contrast to most WINTEL compatibles, where multiple sellers create and integrate hardware intended to run another company's operating software.

For 2011, it was estimated that Apple was responsible for 23.1 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. They design Product them to use less material, ship with smaller packaging, free of toxic substances, and stay energy efficient and recyclable as possible. Though revenue has grown, but greenhouse gas emissions per dollar of revenue have decreased by 15.4 percent since 2008. Apple is only the company whose entire product line not only meets but exceeds the strict energy guidelines of the ENERGY STAR specification.

Environment Conclusion Material use : Apples designers and engineers have pioneered the development of smaller, thinner, and lighter products. As our products become more powerful, they require less material to produce and generate fewer carbon emissions. For example, although todays 21.5-inch iMac is more powerful and has a much larger screen than the first-generation 15inch iMac, it is designed with 50 percent less material and generates 50 percent fewer emissions. Toxic substance removal : One of the environmental challenges facing our industry today is the presence of toxic substances such as arsenic, brominated flame retardants (BFRs), mercury, phthalates, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in products... In addition, every display they make whether its built into a system or available as a stand-alone features mercury-free LED backlighting and arsenic-free glass. Environmentally conscious materials : In addition to eliminating toxins and designing products with highly recyclable aluminium enclosures, Apple works with environmentally conscious materials including recycled plastics, recycled paper, biopolymers, and vegetable-based inks. We have also found 18 ways to reengineer secondary materials to the high standard of our designs.

Longer-lasting products : Apple designs products that last. The built-in battery in MacBook Pro line-up is a perfect example. Other notebook batteries can be charged only 200 to 300 times. The MacBook Pro battery can be charged up to 1000 times.6 And because this battery lasts up to five years, MacBook Pro uses just one battery in about the same time a typical notebook uses three. That saves you money, produces less waste, and increases the lifespan of your MacBook Pro. Mac mini uses even less power than a single 13-watt CFL light bulb, making it the most energy-efficient desktop computer in the world.

In todays era of cutting edge technology people know about two type of apples. One that has been created by GOD and the other that was innovated by the GOD of modern technology and computing Mr. Steve Jobs. The only dream that Apple Inc. ever saw through the eyes of its founders was not profit, market share or competition, it was just humble and keen belief in quality. Behind the most path-breaking ideas that were generated in the R&D labs of Apple Inc. were two basic fundamentals of : Simplicity and Perfection. This simplicity and perfection paved the way for Apples creativity in design of their products which made the quality flawless.
