Positive self - talk typically focuses on increasing energy, effort, positive attitude e.g. I can do it. Instructional self - talk usually helps the individual focus on the technical or task related aspects of performance in order to improve execution e.g. keep your eyes on the ball. Negative self - talk is critical and self demeaning and gets in the way of a persons reaching goals. It is counterproductive and anxiety producing. Saying things like that was a stupid shot does not enhance performance or create positive emotion.
