Homer Simpson is the bumbling husband of Marge and father of Bart, Lisa and Maggie Simpson. Homer Simpson is an "everyman" and embodies several American stereotypes of working class blue-collar men: he is crude, overweight, incompetent, clumsy and a borderline alcoholic. In 2010, Entertainment Weekly named Homer "the greatest character of the last 20 years."

Marge is the wellmeaning and extremely patient mother of the Simpson family. She is often portrayed as a stereotypical television mother and is often included on lists of top "TV moms". She is the voice of reason in the mayhem that is the Simpson family.

Bart Simpson is the eldest child in the family at age 10. Bart's most prominent character traits are his mischievousness, rebelliousness, disrespect for authority and sharp wit. Bart has a complex relationship with his father, often addressing him by his real name instead of dad, however the two commonly share adventures and are sometimes allies.

Lisa Simpson is the middle child in the Simpson family and is always depicted as 8 years old. Lisa is highly intelligent and is said to have an IQ of 156. She shows characteristics rarely seen in Springfield, including spirituality and commitment to peaceful ways. She is a vegetarian , a feminist and a human rights crusader.

She is the youngest of the Simpson clan and is often depicted as a baby genius. She has spelled out E=MC with her baby blocks, driven Homer's car, escaped from the Springfield day care center, and written her name on an Etch-A-Sketch. With few exceptions, Maggie never speaks but is very participatory in the events around her, emoting with subtle gestures and facial expressions.

The Simpsons has won dozens of awards since it debuted as a series, including 27 Primetime Emmy Awards, 27 Annie Awards and a Peabody Award. In a 1998 issue celebrating the 20th century's greatest achievements in arts and entertainment, Time magazine named The Simpsons the century's best television series. UK television channel Channel 4 have voted The Simpsons at the top of two polls: 2001's 100 Greatest Kids' TV shows, and 2005's 100 Greatest Cartoons, with Homer Simpson voted into first place in 2001's 100 Greatest TV Characters.
