Agriculture- Organic to Pesticides and chemical fertilizers and changing nature with biotechnology. Standard of living is changing very drastically- all consumer goods are becoming basic needs of every one- more scope for more goods to more production or industrialization.

Drawing inspiration from the Stockholm conference of United Nations on Human Environment, which was held in 1972 & realizing the need for its interference, the Government Of India (GOI) came out with a series of statutory provision & fiscal incentives in order to protect the environment from industrial pollution.

Statutory Provision: 1)Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act,1974Formed State & Centre Boards for the Prevention and control of water pollution, land pollution is also covered. 2)Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Cess Act,1977- with addition to above - to levy cess on the consumption of water by specific industries & local bodies at the rate specified in the schedule to the act.

Statutory Provision: 3)The GOI enacted Air ( Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act in 1981 in order to control Air Pollution. 4) Environment Protection Act 1986- The Main objective of the Act is to Protect & improve the environment & the prevention of hazards to human beings, other living creatures, plant & property.

Statutory Provision: 5) 1980: Dept of Environment in Delhi: setup- where clearance is now made compulsory of any new industrial enterprise to setup. Environment Management reporting has now been made compulsory. Specially in the case of public sector undertakings.

Fiscal & Financial Incentives: GOI has offered several fiscal incentives. Tax Exception, depreciation allowance at increased rate, reduction in water cess, etc. for industries which introduce pollution control devices.
