-KFC -Internet is growing -Relying on technology (e.g. airports) -Western styled clothes -Baseball, bodybuilding, golf gaining popularity -English

Cambodian Culture VS. American Culture


U.S Culture -No real culture -Diverse language and religion -Divorce rates are high -Various types of food Similarities -Elders are respected. Cambodian Culture -Older the person = more respect.

-Theravada Buddhism
-90% speak Khmer

-Not many divorces


-Food (tropical fruits, soups and noodles)

-No traditional clothing

-Clothing depends on ethnic group/class

Feelings about American Culture


Pro-American Feelings (Younger Generation) -Younger Generation is accepting -Technology -Clothes Anti-American Feelings (Older Generation) -Older generation doesn't like American culture -"Many people won't know their true culture" -Inappropriate clothes (e.g skirts, jeans)

Cambodian Genocide
-Khmer Rouge's leader was Pol Pot, create a revolutionary state -A quarter of population killed -Slave laborers -Economy suffered, the Khmer Rouge wanted agricultural laborers, shut down businesses -No one helped Cambodia

American influence on Cambodian economy


-U.S donates millions of dollars -U.S donation theory -Other countries also support Cambodia -50% of Cambodia's government budget = donor assistance -World Bank, IMF, and UN

Developed or Developing?
-Higher chance of infant mortality -Malnutrition -33.33% more chance to get HIV/AIDS -Poverty decreasing -Technology increasing -Countries helping

Economy in Cambodia
-U.S, Canada, Germany -Export: rice, clothing, fish, timber, rubber -Import: petroleum products, gold, cigarettes, machinery, construction materials -Economy depends on tourism and garments -Part of ASEAN and WTO (World trade organization)

U.S influence on politics


-Supported general Lon Nol -Khmer Rouge overthrew Lon Nol -Genocide -U.S Backed Khmer Rouge (both against Vietnam) -Vietnam took over, Cambodia = no support -Paris Peace Agreement, after Cambodia has first elections monitored by the UN

-International Monetary Fund: loans money to Cambodia

-United Nations Industrial Development Organization: promotes technological advances -United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization: emphasizes on human rights and alleviates poverty -World Federation Trade Unions: brings together trade unions across the world. Helps working and living conditions.

-Multiparty Democracy under a constitutional monarchy (Cambodian People's Party, Cambodian National Rescue Party, Funcinpec) -King Norodom Sihamoni -Prime Minister Hun Sen -Executive Branch, Legislative Branch, Judicial Branch -Suffrage at the age of 18

Does America have a more positive or negative effect on Cambodia?


Positive Effects Culture
-Education programs, better sanitation.

influence impacting culture a bit.

-Trade and Donate money.

didn't help when help was needed.

-U.S supports Cambodia's politics.

basically caused the civil war and genocide.

basically caused majority of the struggles that Cambodia had to deal with. -Genocide -Famine -Economy plummeted -Even though the U.S does help Cambodia out they're the reason why Cambodia didn't develop.
