Waste in the UAE

Abu Dhabi has the highest (per capita) level of waste in the world. In 2007-2008, Abu Dhabi produced 5.9 million tonnes of waste Landfills and dump sites. Every resident in Abu Dhabi generates about 4.2 kilograms of waste/day. Biggest landfill in Abu Dhabi is in Al Dhafra that receives at least 20,000 tonnes of waste/day.

Offers recycling programmes for wastes to: organizations, schools and individuals across the UAE. -purchase specially designed segregation bins at nominal costs. -The collection facility is complimentary to the recycling participants.

EEG has recycling programmes only for

- paper, - plastic, - cans, glass, - toners, - Tetra pak cartons, - old mobiles, - Batteries collected and are disposed off safely with the aid of Dubai Municipality.

Major recycling scheme -Two garbage bins Green garbage- recyclable waste Black garbage-non-recyclable waste Waste disposal system -electro-hydraulic underground waste collection system. -eliminate bad smell, scavengers and litter around bins. -Fitted with sensors sending alerts when 75% full.

Deals with different types of waste: -Construction waste -General non-hazardous and organic wastes -Wooden and glass waste -Hazardous waste -Medical waste

Construct a new incinerator for medical waste -capacity of 19.2 tons/day -Largest in the gulf region

Actions and projects

In UAE, there are a number recycling factories positioned in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Fujairah Free Zone. Dubai municipality is planning to operate a tyre recycling plant. Dubai municipality has developed the middle east waste summit.

What can you do to help reduce waste?

Industries & businesses

Only print when needed and try to print on both sides. Reduce disposal materials Use waste management systems

Education

Use refillable pens and pencils. Purchase stationary that have recyclable content. Have environment hour/day/week/group to encourage and raise students awareness about waste management.

Residents

Avoid disposable batteries and use rechargeable ones instead. Use shopping bags. Avoid take away in restaurants to reduce packaging waste. Buy food in recyclable and reusable containers. Refill water bottles. Use towels instead of tissues. Avoid plastic wraps to cover food and use small plates instead.
