Many opportunities exist in sport.
Becoming a performer is the
obvious way, but there are also
other roles:

The pathways a young performer
can progress include:

Sports leader

Sports Leaders UK (
www.sportsleaders.org) is a
registered charity, providing
opportunities to gain awards and
qualifications in essential sports
leadership skills.

The nationally recognized awards


help develop core skills such as
organization, motivation and
communication, as well as giving
candidates the opportunity to grow
in confidence.
The practical aspect of the awards
can equip the candidate with lifelong
self-management and leadership
skills.

The qualifications can act as a


stepping stone to employment and
volunteering, helping people to
become healthier and active in their
community.

Volunteer
For many sports clubs to be run
efficiently they need volunteers.
The jobs associated with running a
club are wide and varied.
In most cases players double up
their contribution to the club by
taking on other roles, such as player
and accountant.

often vital to keep
a club in
existence.

They often draw


on their life skills
to help with the
role.

Official
In 2007/08 the Youth Sport Trust
funded training for young people
between the ages of 16 and 19 to
officiate at sports such as athletics,
volleyball, swimming and gymnastics.
The aim was to give
young people skills to
help at events alongside
top officials.

Coach
sports coach UK is
dedicated to guiding the
development and
implementation of a
coaching system,
recognized as a world
leader, for all coaches
at every level in the UK.

The UK Coaching Framework was


launched in April 2007. In January
2009 31 sports were signed up to
The Framework.

The UK Coaching Framework has


been developed in cooperation with
sports coach UK, governing bodies
of sport, the four Home Country
Sports Councils, SkillsActive, UK
Sport, Youth Sport Trust,
government departments and
agencies, local authorities, British
Olympic and Paralympic associations
and the Association for Physical
Education.

Framework is to:
• Create a cohesive, ethical,
inclusive and valued coaching
system where skilled coaches
support children, players and

The performance pyramid shows the
structure of progress in sport.

PESSCL
Through the Physical Education
School Sport and Club Links
(PESSCL) strategy, the government
has invested £978 million between
2003/04 and 2007/08, with the aim
of increasing the number of 5–16
year olds taking up and continuing
to play sport.

Sport England

Sport England launced a new


strategy in June 2008, Grow Sustain
Excel, which aims to help people of
all ages and abilities to take part in
sport in their community.

• Grow: increase the number of
participants in physical activity.
