Introduction to the Child and Family

Delilah: -a four-year-old child with cerebral palsy -The left side of her body is affected. -Her ability to articulate words is affected. -She is very bright and outgoing. -She loves being with other children. -She gets very frustrated when people dont understand what she is trying to say. -Her younger sister Sophie is six months old. -Her parents are new to the city of Toronto.

Introduction to the Individual Special Needs

What is Cerebral Palsy (CP)? CP is a term used to describe a neurological condition affecting body movement and muscle co-ordination. What are the effects of CP? The effects of CP vary from individual to individual. It depends on which areas of the brain have been injured. Who is affected? One out of every 500 babies, and up to one in three premature babies is affected to some extent. What causes CP? CP may be congenital or acquired during or after birth.

What are the types of CP? CP can be classified by number of limbs involved and by movement disorder. How is it diagnosed or detected? evaluating how a baby or young child moves; using CAT scans and MRI to identify lesions in the brain. Management and Supports of CP therapy, medications, surgery, educational supports, adaptive equipment, accessibility, and attitudes

Reflection on my attitude and practice -bias-free program -learning about Delilah and her family -planning for inclusion -to be an effective teacher Modifications to the physical environment -accommodating the wheelchair or walker -keeping visual displays and toys at eye level -making toys and reading materials etc. easy to reach

Self-Evaluation

For me, this is not an assignment. This is the real circumstance I am experiencing.

For me, Delilah and her family are not from the scenario. They are the real persons live in my life. They smile. They become frustrated. They feel happy. They feel sad. They say hello to me. They seek help from me. All the scenes appear in my mind vividly. I make every effort to work with them.
