Solidification of BMG

Solidification of BMG
Method: Splat cooling or melt spinning

Alloy is melted by induction in a ceramic crucible and propelled under high gas pressure at a very high speed against a rotating copper disk and chills rapidly Rapid solidification results in: i) Significant extension of solid solubility ii) Grain refinement iii) Reduced microsegregation

Palladium based bulk metallic glass

Palladium displayed fatigue strength as good as the best composite bulk metallic glasses comparable to regular polycrystalline structural alloys such as steel, aluminum and titanium.

Magnesium based bulk metallic glass

Magnesium-based bulk metallic glasses are attractive due to their - single-phase - chemically homogeneous alloy system - absence of second phases which may improve the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance and result in more uniform corrosion properties.

Play an increasingly important role in the automotive, aerospace and consumer electronics industries as a result of their high specific

strength and stiffness

Iron based bulk metallic glass

APPLICATION OF BMG

Jewellery is generally made from precious metals such as gold, platinum, and palladium. Jewellery articles made of solid precious metals are quite common, although clad materials and veneered composites are also used to a certain degree

Jewellery is defined where the metallic component comprises at least a solid piece of precious metal alloy of more than 0.1 mm thickness.
Generally, it is desired that the content of precious metal in the jewelry alloy is above a minimum weight percentage such as 14 karat or 18 karat.

Sensors are devices that convert one form of energy into another. The combination of good magnetic properties in the absence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy, and the mechanical strength of these alloys make them suitable for sensor applications. Amorphous materials are broadly classified into two categories, highly magnetostrictive and near-zero magnetostrictive types, both of which are extensively used in sensor applications.

It has been discovered that certain bulk metallic glass (BMG) alloys have a very low MRI signature. BMG materials have high hardness, tensile strength, and toughness. The present invention is based on the discovery that the unique properties of BMG alloys make them especially suitable for biomedical implant applications as well as for medical instruments. The bulk metallic glass has an excellent MRI signature due to its amorphous structure. An accurate signature of the metallic implant or instrument is of paramount importance for accurate position information of the instrument or implant device.
