NII Non Invasive Inspection
Refers to any inspection performed from the outside of
the vessel without having to break containment and/or
not requiring vessel entry
May be performed on-stream or off-stream
Non-invasive and non-intrusive terms are often used
interchangeably
IVI Internal Vessel Inspection
Traditional method of vessel inspection
Definition
CAN
CAN
Internal Inspection
High Cost associated with shutting
down a vessel, loss of production,
Isolation, Preparation for entry
(drain & purge)
Potential performance loss due to
mechanical disturbances involved in
preparing the vessel for internal
inspection and reinstating it
Susceptibility of the process
materials to atmosphere
General Benefits of NII
Non Invasive Inspection
Cost reduction due to possibility of
avoiding the need to shut down the
vessel operation entirely
Shortening of Shutdown turnaround
/ planning by preliminary inspection
to determine repair & maintenance
requirement
Removal of requirement to break
containment. No need to isolate,
drain and purge the vessel
Minimises disturbances to the
vessel which could create new
problems.
CAN
CAN
No man access which can be hazardous due to possibilities
of flammable or toxic residues which can be difficult to
remove
Reduction of risks to personnel entering confined spaces
No loss of containment which avoids release of hazardous
material or pollution
Reduce confined space entry time by targeting the most
suspect areas in advance of invasive inspection

CAN
NII advantages for HSE only when carried out
effectively and reliably
As part of NII Procedure DNV-RP-G103
Includes Risk Based Inspection / Corrosion Risk Assessment
Assesses HSE consequences of failure separately from the
purely business and cost consequences
High: One or more fatalities or serious injuries requiring hospital treatment, or
major release of hazardous material or pollution
Medium: Injury requiring hospital treatment, or release of hazardous material or
pollution but with no significant effect off site
Low: At most, minor injury with full recovery, or minimal release of hazardous
material or pollution
