What is Rsum?
A French word.
Stands for a summary of whom you worked
for and what you did.
ANUBHAV JAIN
National Trainer
A Rsum is also
An advertisement that reflects your
personal brand and appeals to employers
specific needs, such as the need to
generate income, save money, or solving
a problem.
A formal business communication that
indicates your command of vocabulary,
grammar, and punctuation.
ANUBHAV JAIN

A Rsum is also
Keyword index that represents your

name brand companies or universities,
degrees, licensure, software experience,
or affiliations.
Unique art form that combines font-work,

My rsum: How many pages?
You must fit your rsum in 1-2 pages (for
candidates with no experience or very
limited experience 1 page only).
My rsum: How many pages?
Your rsum should never be longer than
2 pages (unless an unusual
circumstance).
You are creating a snapshot of your
career, not an autobiographical essay of
your entire past.
Can rsum be of 3 or more
pages?
Yes !!
When you are the person who has vast
experience in his/her field with great deal
of skills need to be highlighted.
Or have done numerous of researches,
written number of publications, research
work, have given lot of presentations at
various levels etc.
Recommendations
Write your rsum first.
Organize and format information and then
see whether you can fit everything
comfortably in one page.
Strive for one page, but do not sacrifice
information that is truly important.
ANUBHAV JAIN
National Trainer
Use high quality paper to print
your rsum
To ensure professional look and feel of
your rsum, I recommend executive bond
papers (100 gsm) when you present it in
the form of hard copy.
Be sure that the watermark in bond paper
is positioned face up and right-side up on
the document.
ANUBHAV JAIN

Recommendations
Always save word or pdf file of your
rsum under an easy to identify file
name.
I recommend saving your rsum under
your own name. For ex

Always save your rsum in a format
compatible to other versions of Ms-Word

Explanation
Hiring authorities receive hundreds of
rsums and many of them are simply
called rsum.doc. This forces hiring
manager to spend time saving files with a
more distinguishable title.
Choose a file name that includes your last
name, first name, and the word rsum.
This will save hiring managers valuable
time and frustration. Furthermore your
rsum can be easily identified among a
pile of documents.
Recommendation
Always have a text only (.txt) version of
your rsum. Quite often you will be asked
to paste your rsum in job sites or
employers site which only supports text
only matter. So to avoid misrepresentation
of information prepare a supporting text
format.
ANUBHAV JAIN
National Trainer
Explanation
If you attempt to copy and paste a Word
document into a text box or body of email,
the documents formatting is severely
compromised.
Another advantage of text version is that
you can quickly add it to body of your
email in addition to attaching your Word
version.
ANUBHAV JAIN
National Trainer
Explanation
Having your information in the body of
email can increase the likelihood that
hiring manager will review your document
first because they are not required to take
time to open up your Word document and
there is no risk of catching a virus from
text-only version.

ANUBHAV JAIN
National Trainer
How do I know that my rsum is
right?
There are no rules.
You can include what you like, emphasize
most important information and organize
and present the material in any way that
makes sense to paint the perfect picture of
who you are and what you have to offer.
ANUBHAV JAIN
National Trainer
Recommendations
You may know your rsum is right when it
helps you define and organize your skills
and attracts interviews for you.
Remember, your rsum is as unique as
you are.
ANUBHAV JAIN
National Trainer
1. Employers and candidates view
rsums as having different purposes
Employers use rsums as a screening
device to deal with flood of responses to
job postings.
Employers purposefully look for reasons to
dump you.
In contrast, applicants use rsums to
introduce themselves to employers, with
the hope of getting an interview with hiring
decision maker.
An ordinary or average rsum can
knock you out of running for
positions for which you might be
wholly qualified.
Applicants mistaken belief is that
employers will be thrilled or have
time to read every word about them.
Slightest errorskills missing,
disorganized content, a tiny typomay
cause to disqualify and discard you (your
rsum is now a liability).
2. A support person or computer
program will probably the one to
screen your rsum
Unless you are applying to a relatively
small organization, it is more likely that a
support staff member or computer
program, rather than a hiring manager, will
be screening your rsum.
If your rsum is being electronically
processed, there is even greater gap
between you and hiring manager.
3. Rsums are not read
thoroughly
Feedback from screeners is that an
inviting-to read, pretty rsum is more
likely to get into the interview pile.
Interviewers have admitted not reading
rsums word for word; rather, they liked
the look of a rsum and were quickly able
to locate key achievements and skills that
were important for the position being filled.
4. You will not always need a
rsum to land a job
Some people find themselves in situations
where employer-to-be has indirectly
offered a job and requested a rsum as
a formality.
ANUBHAV JAIN
National Trainer
Remember
You are a slave to your written words and
can not easily take them back.
A quickly thrown-together rsum reflects
quality of work you will put forth in future.
It may happen that interviewer also has a
super-sharp rsum of a candidate
competing for same job.
ANUBHAV JAIN
National Trainer
Then why to spend time, energy,
and brain power to write a rsum?
Protocol: If you are in job search mode,
virtually everyone will ask to see your
rsum.
Positioning: Like a beautifully crafted
advertisement, it should magnetically
attract reader, create a picture of high
potential, and differentiate you from your
competition, including those who may
appear more qualified than you.
ANUBHAV JAIN
National Trainer
Permanent reminder: Keep in mind
that your rsum might be used to help
justify hiring decision to others who have
not met you. It should convey not only your
professional qualifications, but your
personality as well.
Profit: A dynamite business rsum
documents your ability to make a company
healthier or more profitable in turn gives you
greater job security and ammunition for
commanding a higher salary.
Process: Preparing your rsum is a
process that will sharpen your ability to
communicate your value while networking,
interviewing, and negotiating offers.
A good rsum can serve as a blueprint
for interview and helps interviewer
focused on your strengths.

FAQ
I am not sure exactly what I want to do. I
am open to lot of different jobs and I am
afraid if I pin down a position, I will not be
considered for others. Wont that hurt my
job search?
ANUBHAV JAIN
National Trainer
Answer
Remember, it is not enough to present
yourself to company and expect the
employer where (or if) you fit in their
business.
If your rsum shows skills and attributes
that fit these needs you are likely to get
interview call.
But if your rsum is unclear and
unfocused, they do not have time to try
you.
Recommendation
If you are interested in several jobs that
are quite diverse, you will need to develop
different versions of your rsum to
become an attractive candidate for the
position.

There is always a chance that you will get
job offer because of your positive attitude
or someone who they hired last year with
a background just like yours turned out to
be one of their brightest employees.
But do not depend on co-incidence or luck.
Use your rsum to tell employers what

Step 2. How to capture your

In real estate, it is location, location,
location.
In rsum writing, it is position, position,

Unless your key information is seen
,regardless of its merit,
it will not have value.
Remember
It is your jobnot the readersto prove
that you fit the position. Organize your
material in such a way that reader cannot
miss your key selling points.
Positioning information is the critical
element in capturing readers interest. If
you do not deliver goods at the VISUAL

Cover letter focus statement
If your target company is large and has
number of opportunities in customer
service, elaborate on your subject line in
the body of cover letter and use specific
titles the company uses.
I believe my skills would be best suited to
your Customer Service Department for
instance, in positions such as International

companies or employers, prestigious
universities attended, degrees,

If you do not have prior paid work

Examples could be, volunteer activities,
unpaid work experience, leadership of

Skills
Best for functional resume format.
A heading is only a section head; you can
use subheadings under headings to
outline skill areas that reflect your talents
and strengths.
Who should use skills section?
People:
In career transition
With unrelated industry experience
With limited paid experience
Having no recent work history
Who are unstable, too old, or
overqualified
With career specialization issues etc.,

Recommendation:
Do not overload your rsum with high

Should I include high school information
ANUBHAV JAIN

That depends. If it is good include it.
If your percentage/CGPA is unimpressive,
omit it.
Off course, the first question you are
asked in an interview might be, What was
your GPA? But you might not even be in
that interview if you had listed a low GPA
on your resume. Do not get yourself
screened out of consideration by including
a low GPA.
Should I include my percentage?
Should I include my
graduation (or professional
course etc) date, if I have not
finished my course yet?
ANUBHAV JAIN
National Trainer
If you are starting your job search within a
few months of graduation, it is not
necessary. For ex, rsum with MBA,
June 2011 that is circulated in March
does not need to be explained.
Alternatively, while you are still pursuing
course use word projected or anticipated.
For ex, MBA anticipated 2011.

I will not recommend as it will take valuable
space in rsum.
Exceptions:
But consider it, if you have taken advance

It can be helpful if you are applying for
internships.
If you want to emphasize your major
subjects.
Should I list my subjects?

Endorsements are a new spin on an old
process: letters of reference (or

Letter of reference gives hiring managers
another persons opinion of you so that they
do not have to rely solely on claims you
make in rsum or interview.
These third-party recommendations add
weight and credibility to your candidacy.
Endorsements
Use of endorsements is a tremendously
effective tool to beef up your candidacy,
especially when you are lacking certain
qualifications or competing against more
experienced candidates.

Reference list: Save this one, too, for

Conclude your rsum by centering the

Two reasons why to write this:
1. Informs readers that the end of the

2. Brings balance and visual closure to the

Keys to writing compelling copy
First, you must address the needs of your
audience (your employer to-be).
Second, you must be concise and sum up
years of experience within the boundaries
of one or two pages.
Third, you must focus on your transferable
skills so that the reader can relate your
experience to his or her frame of
reference.
1. Address
needs of your
audience
When you edit your rsum, one of the first
questions to ask yourself is Does this
information explain why the employer should
hire me over my competitors?
Another important question to
consider is what salary you
anticipate receiving.
Remember
Employers expect you to
have the ability to
communicate clearly,
regardless of your level of
responsibility or ranking.
People do judge you by how
well you communicate.

2. Summarize
using ABC
method
Accuracy: Check and double-check all your
details; make sure that numbers are
accurate, especially percentages and
money figures in your accomplishment
statements.
Brevity: Consolidate
years of information
onto one or two
pages. Look for any
information that is
repetitive or irrelevant
and cut it out.
2. Summarize
using ABC
method
Clarity: Ask two or three people who are
unfamiliar with your present or past
employers to read and point out any
confusing or unclear terminology.
Deliver goods
up front
When readers are doing
quick scan of your
rsum, they might read
just first few words of
each sentence.
To cover your bases,
start impact statements
with results and then
describe method for
achieving results.
Place results or numeric
information at start of

Place results or

3. Start

Give outdated experience a
feeling of real time
The present progressive (I am managing)
and past progressive tenses (I was
managing) equip you with a tool for
blurring the dates of your experience yet
another trade secret calls for dropping
pronouns (I) and helping verbs (am or
was) before the verb, you then start the
sentence with the main action (managing),
which makes it possible to give older
experience a feeling of real time.
It is a fair practice to use progressive
tenses if you need to make outdated
experience sound fresh and
contemporary.
Remember
Only limitation is that you
must be consistent in your
usage throughout rsum.
ANUBHAV JAIN
National Trainer
Change verb from present
progressive (managing) to
present tense (manage) if
you are still employed with
company, or to past tense
(managed) if you are no
longer at company.
Remember
Dealing with
soft skills
Employers cannot discount
soft skills when considering
whom to hire.
Unfortunately, it is quite easy
for everyone to include list of
glowing personal skills on
their rsums when, indeed,
they might have no such
skills such as good oral and
written communication skills,
interpersonal, and teamwork
skills etc.
Although this example
uses good keywords but
it looks more like a
documentation.
In this after example skills are
highlighted along with there
respective
accomplishments.

Consistency counts
Use same line spacing between headings
and horizontal rule lines for each and every
category.
Use consistent tab sets and bullet styles
for all bulleted items within a category

another invisible vertical line to visually
absorb.

Make bullets
work for you
Bullets signal your reader that
something important and impressive
follows.
Overusing them only detracts from
palatable portions of your rsum.
Consider reserving bullets for
accomplishments or relatively short lists.

Keep headings
to a minimum
For a clean look with more white space,
limit number of category headings used
on a page.
Three to five is usually sufficient, with
lesser number preferred.

Combining two sections (Affiliations and
Technical skills) pares nine lines to just
four lines.
When the item is major selling point and
you have ample room to spare, present
it in this manner.
If space is an issue, and it often is,
consider three separate categories
totaling nearly 13 lines now become
one category of 4 lines.
By combining
two
categories
you save
4 lines.
Segment paragraphs
Individuals who have worked at same
company or have worked in same field for
long time need to devote majority of their
rsum to it. If this is case, use segmenting
thick paragraphs.
Segmenting refers to grouping similar
responsibilities together and presenting
them in multiple paragraphs.

Balance refers to distribution of weight,
or copy, on page.
Top and bottom margins and left and
right margins are first place to look for
balance.
Pay careful attention to make sure that
left and right margins are equidistant.

Choosing a font
Font size can range from 9 points to 12
points.
The more senior the position you seek,
the more traditional font selection should
be.
Font selection also goes hand in hand
with layout/pattern.

You can avoid design expand by limiting
your selection of fonts to two.
In many cases, one is plenty.
If you choose to introduce a second font,
save it for headings or your name
instead of mixing it haphazardly within
the body copy.
Reserve the more decorative fonts or
bold fonts for category headings.

Underlining text
Think twice before using underlining.
Rarely will you use it for anything other
than company names or position titles,
and you should not use it for both of these.
On some occasions you might want to
underline important text to help draw
readers eyes to juicy information.
See example as given is next slide...

Use levels two through four (pick just
one) for your category headings; then
another lower level for company names,
and so on.
Be cautious about jumping from lower
level to higher level and then back to
lower level or repeating a level for
different pieces of information.

name with without bold or caps (a lower
