What is an Assessment Center ?

An assessment center is a process in which several
different competencies of potential or existing
employees are evaluated by more than one assessor
using multiple techniques. These techniques
include paper-and-pencil inventories, interviews
and role plays and simulations. The results of the
assessment center process can be used for
employee selection or development.

An Assessment Centre is a process that allows
participants to demonstrate skills, attributes and
behaviors specifically related to the role for which they
are applying.
This is done through engaging a group of candidates in
a variety of structured individual and group related
exercises that have been designed to identify specifically
identified job-related skills, attributes and behaviors.
Trained assessors observe and evaluate performance in
these tailored activities. An objective assessment of a
candidates predicted success in the role is made based
on their combined results

Role of Assessment Centers

Assessment centers are today considered the most effective
tools for identifying future managers.
They help a company to hire (and also promote) the best
people by evaluating their knowledge, behavioral traits,
skills and competencies.
Selected candidates go through simulations and situational
exercises which are effective indicators of their abilities.
These may range from leaderless group discussions (to
judge a persons leadership and communication skills) to
role-plays on dealing with difficult subordinates.
The aim is to highlight the competencies of an individual
and the areas that need improvement.

Why Do Organizations Hold
Assessment Centers ?

To recruit the best
To assess everyone together
To be able to spend time with
candidates

Why do Organizations Hold Assessment Centers ?

They provide a more comprehensive overview of
strengths and limitations than any single method.

They are standardized, so every candidate has the
same opportunities to demonstrate their skills.

They allow you to show a range of abilities in a variety
of different situations; your performance on all the
different exercises is taken into account.

Advantages of Assessment Centre

Assessment center is used for selection, training and
promotion of candidates.

The candidate can find out their strengths and
weakness.

The candidates can improve their performance.

It is more valid because the candidate is evaluated
(judged) by many different experts.
Disadvantages of Assessment Centre

Assessment center is very costly.

It is very time consuming.

Highly experienced managers are required to evaluate
the candidates.

Case Study

The telecommunications industry was being deregulated, and
as a result one telecommunications company changed its
business strategy. This company decided to expand its core
business to include cable television, cellular phones, and
so on. This change altered the critical skills and abilities
needed by supervisors and managers to make the business
successful. In particular, supervisors and managers needed to
improve their performance in the areas of customer service
and team work. The company decided that one way to
improve performance in these areas was to implement an
assessment center.
The assessment center was seen as an appropriate solution
because the company needed to accomplish two goals:

Assess the skill levels of current supervisors and managers
in order to create individual development plans for
incumbents
Ensure that future hires (and internal employees who were
promoted) possessed the desired skill levels.
