Introduction of WCL
Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) is one of the eight
Subsidiary Companies of Coal India Limited (CIL).
The company came into existence on 1st November,
1975, after re-organization of the Nationalized Coal
Industry.
The Company incorporated under the Companies
Act, 1956 has its registered office at Coal Estate, Civil
Lines, Nagpur .
Introduction of WCL
The Company has contributed about 8.6% of
the national coal production during 2011-12.
WCL has been conferred "Miniratna" status on
15th March'2007.
The present WCL has mining operation spread
over in the States of Maharashtra (in Nagpur,
Chandrapur & Yevatmal Districts) and in
Madhya Pradesh (in Betul and Chhindwara
Districts).

Financial Performance:
The turnover of the company during the year 2010-
11 was Rs.7073.44 crores.
The net profit for the year is Rs.1067.97 crores.
The company has paid Rs.504.74 crores by way of
corporate taxes to Central Government during the
year 2010-11.
the company contributed to the State/ Central
exchequer around Rs.1036.26 crores by way of
royalty and Sales Tax & other levies during the year
2010-11.
Performance appraisal system
Performance appraisal is a method of
evaluating the behaviour of employees in the
work place normally including both the
quantitative and qualitative aspects of job
performance. Performance refers to the
degree of accomplishment of the tasks that
make up an individuals job. It indicates how
well an individual is fulfilling the job
demands.

Week 1
In the first week, there was an orientation
conducted by the concerned authority at WCL
Wani.
In this orientation programme major areas
cover are:
About WCL
Organisation structure
Various projects (including CSR etc.)

Week 2
Get familiar with the working of WCL
I was asked to go through few departments,
and asked to look and observe their working.
Especially flow of work, how work has been
done? who are the authorities? who are
responsible to complete the task?

Week 3
In this week, I was asked to go through HR
documents.
I have seen (not inspected) various HR
records, for e.g., HR Manual, Leave record
system, Service record files of few employees,
HRD policy.
Also asked to read about performance
appraisal topic.

Week 4
During this week, I was asked to prepare a
questionnaire for inquiring about employees
feedback about PMS.
I prepared the questionnaire, but latter on
they asked me to use their designed
questionnaire.
I have latter prepared questionnaire for
organisation to know about PMS system.

Week 5
I went to different departments and circulated
the questionnaires
I have given 50 copies, but only 39 submitted
the duly filled questionnaire.
Latter on I covert into table and analyzed the
data.
During this task supervisor, guide me how to
go about.

Working of PSU is in a set of functions.
Every activity has some draft in the form of manual
While collecting data, employees were unwilling to
give their responses properly.
System is well designed and implementation is also
proper.
I learned many of the critical things such as filling
and maintenance of records and its significance in
the any organisation
