What we are going to learn

Text

How to read and to write text types (genres)
Text is a
unit of
meaning

Text can be spoken
or written
(a telephone
conversation, a
speech, a letter, a
diary an
assignment, a
report)




Text can be short (one like Entry)

and can be long (like a novel or a book).



One page of a novel cannot be called a text
because it does not give the reader a
complete meaning.

questions answered.




Tips for locating main idea

Identify the topic.
Find the most general sentence.
Study the rest of the paragraph.

Generic Structure of a Hortatory
Exposition Text
Thesis: introductory statement and
authors position of the topic
Arguments: Elaboration of opinions and
facts related to the topic, leading to the
recommendation
Recommendation: authors suggestion for
the readers related to the topic


Is writing the same as spoken language
written down?


Writing is a social process: a means of
connecting with others in order to share ideas
and information (Hertsberg, 2012:108).

The process of writing

1. Think about the topic
2. Think about the purpose:
Identify the best text type and its elements
3. Write a plan
4. Write drafts (revise, edit)
5. Show it to others to get feedback
6. Write a final, neat draft
