MY 4 GUIDING PRINCIPLES
1. TECHNOLGY IS A TOOL,
NOT A LEARNING
OUTCOME.

2. TECHNOLOGY WONT
REPLACE TEACHERS, BUT
TEACHERS WHO USE
TECHNOLOGY WILL
REPLACE TEACHERS WHO
DO NOT.
MY 4 GUIDING PRINCIPLES
3. TEACHERS HAVE A
RESPONSIBILITY TO ADOPT
THE LATEST TECHNOLOGIES
OR THEY WILL INFRINGE THE
DIGITAL RIGHTS OF
STUDENTS.
4. PEDAGOGY IS THE
ENGINE, TECHNOLOGY IS
THE ACCELEARATOR. (via
Michael Fullan)

rights-of-students/
ACCELERATOR and ACCELERATING
"We live in a time when
kids have more
information in their
pockets than we can
ever have in our heads.
Chris Lehmann
1981
CONSIDER:
Around 700 million levels of
Candy Crush are played
each day
The developers, King, earn
$680,000 AUD per day
The first iPad appeared
in 2010, only 4 years
ago. What
technological
advances will occur if
YOU teach for 33
years?
MIND = BLOWN
TIME TO SMASH
The Pre-Industrial school
model continues to
dominate in many schools
because it is familiar (to
teachers) but this no longer
works for screenagers. SO,
SMASH IT!
The best resource in any
classroom is still and
always will be a great
teacher. SO, SMASH IT!

To be a 21
st
Century
Teacher is a matter of
MINDSET not SKILL SET.

My Manifesto

mind-set-uncategorized-presentation-

YOU NEED TO BE 8 TEACHERS
http://edorigami.wikispaces.com
BECOME
THE ADAPTOR can take
an exam focused
curriculum and transform it
into a dynamic learning
experience. The adaptor
can change horses
midstream when a
teachable moment arises.
The adaptor can plan for
and accommodate a
wide range of learning
styles.
THE COMMUNICATOR is
fluent in tools and
technologies that enable
communication and
collaboration. (Andrew
Churches) The
communicator is
omnipresent.
BECOME
THE (LEAD) LEARNER must
be the teacher.
Dont just show kids what
you know. Show them
what you're learning, and
how you're learning it.
Derek McQuiston
"You can't teach 21st
century learners if you
haven't learned anything
new this century. Gary
Stager (and most of my
colleagues havent!)

THE VISIONARY sees the
potential in technologies
and learns how to
manipulate them to suit a
particular need.
BECOME
THE LEADER doesnt have
to be in a leadership
position in order to lead .
The active champion of
ICT is the most necessary
leader going forward.

THE MODEL
The 21st Century educator
also models reflective
practice, whether its the
quiet, personal inspection
of their teaching and
learning, or through
reflective practice these
educators look both
inwards and outwards.
Andrew Churches
*Well be coming back to this
idea later.
BECOME
THE COLLABORATOR
as an educator we must
be able to leverage these
collaborative tools to
enhance and captivate our
learners. We too, must be
collaborators; sharing,
contributing, adapting and
inventing. Andrew
Churches
Leverage the tools that will
allow you and your students
to be collaborators.
THE RISK TAKER
In my view, both the most
difficult and yet the most
important dont fear ICT
failure, or learning from
your class.
THE 3 Cs are COLLABORATION, CREATION and CURATION
If you wish to
succeed with
learning
technologies
you must
teach above
the line.
A boring worksheet completed on an iPad is still a boring worksheet.
THE STARTERS BUNDLE
10 WEB TOOLS, SITES AND APPS TO GET YOU STARTED
*All of these tools can be used across a range of platforms no
matter what you own or which devices you encounter on Practicum.
*Many of them play nicely together that is, you can integrate or
embed one within the other.
*The first seven are tools for you to consider for your assessment task
which specifies that you include at least one online student-
centred learning resource. I regularly use ALL these ICTs myself.
*The remaining three tools are for your professional learning.
Educreations
A fully recordable online whiteboard
tool for teachers to create digital
content or for students to demonstrate
learning. (A massive online gallery as
well.)

Edmodo
Edmodo provides a safe and easy way
for your class to connect and
collaborate, share content and access
homework. Rapidly becoming the
worlds leading LMS.
Todays Meet
A Backchanneling tool which is
essentially a temporary, secure, single
use chat room. Great for capturing
student reflections, ideas and
questions.
Socrative
A student response system for polls,
quizzes, educational games and exit
tickets. Socrative marks the tests and
forwards you the results in Excel.
Haiku Deck
The ultimate presentation tool that will
spell Death to PowerPoint. Highly
visual and simple to use never
search for an image again!

Thing Link
ThingLink turns a static image into a
navigational surface where you can
embed a range of media including
video, sound and music. Soon to be
available for video as well.
QR Codes
Any number of QR code readers and
generators are available. Codes have
so many uses but you might want to try
this Treasure Hunt Generator. Go to
http://www.classtools.net/QR/

Evernote
Evernote is now an entire suite of tools
to help you curate material. As PSTs you
need to start curating material now! A
great tool also for building student e-
portfolios. The Evernote motto is
Remember Everything.
AITSL Standards App
AITSL recently released an app which
you can use to maintain a record of
your professional learning. I strongly
suggest that you also begin a
reflective, professional blog; a blog is
the resume of the future. LINK your blog
posts to the AITSL standards.

Twitter
Twitter is the ideal platform to
work on building your
professional brand. It offers
immense benefits to teachers
at all career stages.

LETS TAKE A CLOSER LOOK
Around 200 billion tweets are sent
each year. (Thats around 6000
per second.) Of these, an
estimated 12-15% are education
related.

TWITTER IN EDUCATION
What might a truly visionary teacher do with Twitter?
IM GLAD YOU ASKED
THE #TweetingPompeii Project
Our project had students
tweet in role in response to
the events of Vesuvius
eruption. We gained a
worldwide following from
museums, universities,
authors and archaeologists.
We live in an era of
social media where
there is no reason for
student work to be
seen only by their
teacher.
