1.Capitalize the first word of a
sentence.
Examples:
There is something wrong with this cheese.
Strange things have happened recently.
Where did he go?


2. Capitalize the pronoun "I".
Examples:
He asked me where I had bought my jacket.
If I see her, I will give her your message.

3. Capitalize proper nouns and
names.
Examples:
I visited California on my vacation.
She gave Ali a present for his birthday.

Proper nouns: Proper nouns refer to
specific people, places, things, pets,
organizations, etc.
Remember to always capitalize the name of a
person or thing.

4. Capitalize the words North, South, East, and
West when they are used with the name of a
state, country, etc. but not when used for
giving directions.


Correct Examples:
My friend lives in South Carolina.
We are planning a vacation in South Africa.

Incorrect Examples:
I'm going to visit my friends in (Eastern) Oregon. = SHOULD
BE I'm going to visit my friends in eastern Oregon.

5. Capitalize the name of an organization.
Examples:
The National Organization for Women
Some Washington Democrats would like to see the
company up.

Capitalize company names, trademarks and product
names.
Examples:
Honda cars are very expensive.
My niece loves Bata shoes.
This book is published by Oxford University
Press.

8. Capitalize names of periods in history and
historical events.
Examples:
The Vietnam War
The Dot Com Era lasted far shorter than many people
expected.

9. Capitalize specific events
Examples:
I went to the Medical Conference in London last
weekend.
Have you ever attended the Valentines Day Festival?
Farhad Drayas Concert is on Monday.

10. Capitalize acronyms / abbreviations
which refer to specific names.
Examples:
I prefer to watch BBC on TV.
The USA will help Afghanistan financially in the
coming year.

11. Capitalize the names of gods according to
their own religion, including Allah, Vishnu,
and God.
The word god is generally not capitalized if it is used to refer to
multiple gods. (Usually we should use Allah)
Examples:
Allah created the whole universe.
We prayed that God should forbid us from our sins.

months of the year. Do not capitalize
seasons (spring, winter, fall, summer).
Correct Examples:
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

Incorrect Examples:
I love skiing in Winter. SHOULD BE I love skiing in
winter.
They visited Bob last Summer. SHOULD BE They
visited Bob last summer.

. Capitalize countries, languages, and
nationalities (and adjective form of a specific
country)

Examples:
Afghanistan, the United States of America (USA), Saudi Arabia
I lived in Italy for over 10 years.
Do you like French books?
Do you speak Russian or Arabic?

Capitalize family relationships when used in
place of a name.

Examples:
Hey Dad!
Hey Mom!
Did you give Mom her present?
I think Dad needs some money.

15. Capitalize titles that come before names. Do
not capitalize titles that follow names.

Correct Examples:
President Hamid Karzai
Sir Jefferson
Did you talk to Vice Principal Jefferson?
President Bush gave a speech yesterday.
Dr. Gul Baddin was sick yesterday.

16. Capitalize salutations in letter (openings) and
closings.

Examples:
Dear Mr. Smith, Dear Sir: Dear Madam:
Best regards,
Sincerely, Faithfully Yours,
