Objectives
Upon the completion of the this topic the you would be able
to know
1. To design a Mod-5 counter and decade counter using
7490.
2. To design a decade counter and Mod-16 counter using
7493.

CM-305.50

Recap
List the different counters that can be designed with 7490?
7490 can be used to design either Mod-5 counter or Mod-10
counter.
How 7492 can be used?
It can be used to design either Mod-6 counter or Mod-12
counter.
How 7493 can be used?
It can be used to design any asynchronous counter of
modulus less than 16.

7490 as a decade counter

CM-305.50

Design procedure
To design the Mod-10 ripple counter using 7490 the MR
inputs i.e. Pins 2 & 3 and the MS inputs i.e. Pins 6 & 7
must be kept at LOW.
Pin 12 must be connected to Pin 1.
External clock signal must be applied at Pin 14.

Output is to be taken at Pins 11,8,9 &12 respectively.

7490 as a Mod-5 counter

CM-305.50

Design procedure
To design the Mod-5 ripple counter using 7490 the MR
inputs i.e. Pins 2 & 3 and the MS inputs i.e. Pins 6 & 7
must be kept at LOW.
Pins -12 and 14 must be kept open.
External clock signal must be applied at Pin 1.

Output is to be taken at Pins-11,8,& 9 respectively.

7493 as a decade counter

CM-305.50

Design procedure
To design a decade counter using 7493 Pin-12 must be
connected to the Pin-1.
Q1 and Q3 must be connected to the reset inputs R01 and
R02.
External clock input must be give to Pin-14.
Output has to be taken at Pins-11,8,9, and 12
respectively.

10

Design procedure
To design a decade counter using 7493 Pin-12 must be
connected to the Pin-1.
A high signal must be connected to the reset inputs R01
and R02.
External clock input must be give to Pin-14.
Output has to be taken at Pins-11,8,9, and 12
respectively.

Drawbacks of ripple counters

Propagation delay is the major drawback in
these counters
Because it limits the rate at which the counter
can be clocked and creates decoding problems
Low speed of operation
These counters should be forced to recycle to
obtain truncated sequence
