Children

are passive and weak


They are mini versions of adults

Child Development
refers to the biological,
psychological and emotional
changes that occur in human
beings between birth and
the end of adolescence, as
the individual progresses
from dependency to
increasing autonomy.

* It is also a process that


involves learning and
mastering skills such as
sitting, walking, talking,
skipping and tying shoes.
Every child goes through.

STAGES OF CHILD DEVELOPMENT

BIRTH-2 YEARS OLD

BODY GROWTH is marked by


the infant's switch from
crawling to walking.
Changes in Body Size
First 2 years, the body
grows more

Appearance of Teeth
An infant's first tooth usually
appears between 4 to 6
months of age. By age 2, the
child has 20 teeth
Brain Development
At birth, the brain is nearer to
its adult size than any other
physical structure.

walk and begin to talk during

AGES 2-5 YEARS OLD

Toddlers are undergoing unique


changes to their way of
thinking about the world and
themselves.

caregivers to being an
independent person

Toddlers may be able to attend


to some activities for
extended periods, while only
paying attention to other
activities for a matter of
seconds.

from facial expressions and
respond to them.

AGES 13-18 YEARS OLD

Adolescence - the period lasting from

approximately age 13-18- covers many


social and emotional changes. This
transition between childhood and
adulthood leads to rapidly changing
behaviors, identity disturbances and
strong emotions. Although these
characteristics can frustrate or confuse
parents, they are developmentally normal
and a natural part of an adolescents
growth.

A growth spurt usually occurs


near the time of puberty. Girls
begin to develop breasts and
start their periods. Boys grow
facial hair. Both boys and girls
grow pubic hair. Boys may lag
behind girls in height during
these years, but they usually
end up taller.

exercise their evolving skills and to
develop new ones.
