Certificate of Airworthiness

A Certificate of Airworthiness (C of A) is issued


initially by the Contracting state (of manufacture,
for example),
For the C of A to be issued there must be
approved designs, specifications, reports and
documentary evidence to show that the aircraft
complies with airworthiness requirements,
While under construction or when the C of A
needs to be renewed, the aircraft will be
inspected by a State-approved inspection system,
Flight tests will be conducted as required by
the inspectors.

Certificate of Airworthiness

When aircraft are moved from one States


register to another.

When an aircraft, possessing a valid C


of A issued by one Contracting State is
moved to another Contracting State, and
is entered onto the register of the new
contracting state, the new Contracting
State may regard the C of A originally
issued as evidence of airworthiness, and
therefore not require the tests as laid out
in the previous slide.

Continuing a Certificate of Airworthiness

The continuing airworthiness of


an aircraft shall be determined by
the State of Registry in relation to
the

appropriate

airworthiness

requirements of the aircraft,

The State of Registry shall

develop or adopt requirements to


ensure the continued airworthiness
of the aircraft during its service life.

Validity of Certificate of Airworthiness

The Certificate of Airworthiness

shall be renewed or shall remain valid,


subject to the laws of the State of
Registry, provided that State conducts
periodical inspections at appropriate
time intervals.

Withholding a Certificate of Airworthiness

Contracting States shall take


whatever steps are necessary to

Airworthiness if the aircraft is


either known or suspected to
have dangerous features.

Better

airline

cancels a flight rather than call


the

relatives

of

those

killed

following an air-disaster!

Temporary Loss of Airworthiness

When an aircraft has sustained damage, the State of Registry shall judge
whether the aircraft is no longer airworthy.

However, should damage occur in another Contracting State, then that


State is entitled to prevent the aircraft from resuming its flight, on condition
that they shall advise the State of Registry immediately, so that the State of
Registry may decide whether the aircraft is or is not airworthy.

When the aircraft is deemed as not being airworthy, the State of Registry
may allow the aircraft to be flown to another aerodrome where repairs may
be affected.
No fare-paying passengers are allowed under these circumstances.

Summing-up

The C of A is issued for the safety of


crew and passengers,

Without a C of A, under normal

circumstances, an aircraft may not fly,

Under no circumstances can an

aircraft, without a C of A, fly with farepaying passengers,

The State of Registry is the key

holder

to

the

Certificate

of

Airworthiness.
