DESIGN AND APPLICATIONS OF

SELF COMPACTING CONCRETE

INTRODUCTION
Self-consolidating concreteorself-compacting concrete (SCC) is characterized
by a low yield stress, high deformability, and moderateviscositynecessary to ensure
uniform suspension of solid particles during transportation, placement (without
external compaction), and thereafter until theconcretesets.
Such concrete can be used for casting heavilyreinforcedsections, places where
there can be no access tovibratorsfor compaction and in complex shapes of
formwork which may otherwise be impossible to cast, giving a far superior surface
than conventional concrete. SCC was conceptualized in 1986 by Prof. Okamura at
Ouchi University, Japan.
The first generation of SCC used inNorth Americawas characterized by the use of
relatively high content of binder as well as high dosages of chemicalsadmixtures,
usually superplasticizerto enhance flowability and stability. Such high-performance
concrete had been used mostly in repair applications and for casting concrete in
restricted areas. The first generation of SCC was therefore characterized and
specified for specialized applications.

Objectives
To design self compacting concrete (SCC) using
special admixtures known as MasterGlenium Sky
8784 and VMA MasterMatrix 2.
Conduct various tests on SCC and Normal
concrete.
Compare SCC to Normal concrete (NC)

ADMIXTURES
MasterGlenium Sky 8784
MasterGlenium SKY 8784 is the superplasticiser
based on second generation polycarboxylic ether
polymers, developed using nano-technology. The
product has been primarily developed for
producing economical, high performance, high
grade ready-mix concrete Total Performance
Control.
MasterGlenium SKY 8784 is free of chloride &
low alkali. It is compatible with all types of
cements.
What makes MasterGlenium SKY 8784 a unique solution?
MasterGlenium SKY 8784 helps to produce high performance concrete with longer workability
retention ,
and high early strength. Mostly compatible with all OPC, PPC, PSC and can be used with high
pozzolonic
material.

MasterMatrix 2
MasterMatrix2is a ready-to-use, liquid, organic, viscosity-modifying admixture (VMA) specially
developed for producing concrete with enhanced viscosity and controlled rheological
properties.Concrete containing MasterMatrix2admixture exhibits superior stability and
controlled bleeding characteristics, thus increasing resistance to segregation and facilitating
placement.
The fluidity of the mix is guaranteed provided there is no friction between the internal particles
and the concrete can flow freely; segregation occurs when the components of the concrete
separate out into mortar and large aggregates. Reaching the right balance between fluidity and
resistance to segregation apparently opposing properties is essential for this type of mix.
This balance is lacking when the fluidity of the concrete is obtained by adding water. Although a
superplasticiser admixture gives high fluidity, alone it does not guarantee the
necessary properties to ensure a good degree of self-compacting. That is why
MasterMatrix 2 is a fundamental admixture when making Self Compacting Concrete.
What makes MasterMatrix 2 a unique solution?
MasterMatrix2improves viscosity of concrete which helps to make itself consolidated and also
to get anti wash out properties.

LABORATORY TESTS
Slump flow test
A normal slump cone is used and filled up to the top with the see
to be tested. The concrete is not
compacted. When full, the cone is lifted with normal
speed to allow the concrete to flow on a clean, smooth
and horizontal surface out of metal or laminated wood.
50 cm diameter should be reached after 3-6 seconds,
the final diameter should be between 65 and 75 cm.
Once the concrete has stopped flowing, it has to be
checked to determine any separation effects. No
bleeding should occur and the larger aggregates have to be
distributed evenly.

Use of this test

Test that shows
diameters greater than
25.5, which are
considered SCC.

U BOX TEST
The test was developed by the Technology Research
Centre of the Taisei Corporation in Japan. Some
time the apparatus is called a box shaped test.
The test is used to measure the filing ability ofself
compacting concrete. The apparatus consists of a
vessel that is divided by a middle wall into two
compartments; an opening with a sliding gate is
fitted between the two sections. Reinforcing bar
with nominal diameter of 134 mm are installed at
the gate with centre to centre spacing of 50 mm.
this create a clear spacing of 35 mm between bars.
The left hand section is filled with about 20 liter
ofconcrete then the gate is lifted and
theconcreteflows upwards into the other section.
The height of the concrete in both sections is
measured.

Use of this test

Tests which measure the
passing ability of concrete in
congested reinforcement.

V FUNNEL TEST
The equipment consists of a v shaped funnel. The described V-funnel test is used to
determine the filling ability (flow ability) of theconcretewith a maximum aggregate
size of 20mm. The funnel is filled with about 12 liter of concreteand the time taken
for it to flow through the apparatus measured. After this the funnel can be refilled
concrete and left for 5 minutes to settle. If the concrete shows segregation then the
flow time will increases significantly.

Use of this test

Test that shows how quickly SCC
passes through a constricted area.
