Introduction
Family is basic social institution on which we depend from
the time of our birth
Family has its own belief , traditions and rituals
Elders of family try to transmit these younger generations.
Family encourages the children to follow the habits of the
society finds acceptable
Family consider as unit of production have become units
of consumption.
Family remains as an inspiration to work as unit of
consumer of production.
Families are of different types . They are nuclear family ,
extended family , Matriliny , Patriliny

Family
Family is a basic social institution which we
depend from the time of our birth.
Mans social relations start with family.
In ancient societies,the basic factors of large
social units like race and tribe was family
Each family has its own belief, traditions and
rituals.
Eldest of the family try to transmit these to
younger generations.

The religious belief systems, rituals and


food habits of ones family influence
the individuals.
Besides from this family that one gets
the training to live in the society.
Family encourages the children to
follow the habits.
There are occasions when children are
punished.

Children tries to imitate whatever the elders do.


They observe how their elders behave under
different circumstances.
Elders of family play an important role to
develop good habits to children.
Imitation and games play a vital role in
development of children.
Families perform some other functions also
Family provide primary needs of the individuals
like food, shelter and clothing

Families were considered as units of production


becomes units of consumption.
Importance of production achieved with the help
of the members of the family has been reduced.
In some families parents both father and mother
do very hard work in their respective jobs.
Each members of the family work for the welfare
of the family
Each family follow certain principles and
practises.

The major portion of income is


utilized for the purpose of the family.
Thus family remain as an inspiration
to work as a unit of consumer of
production.

Different Types of Family


Families are classified into:
1. Nuclear Family
2. Extended Family
3. Joint Family
4. Matriliny
5. Patriliny
Nuclear Family
. Consists of mother, father and unmarried children.
Extended family
. When more than one family live as a single family
is known as an extended family.

Joint Family
A group of people who generally live under
one roof ,who eats food cooked at one health
Members of joint family hold property in
common.
Joint family members participate in common
family worship and related to one another as
some particular type of kindred.
Joint family existed in KERALA.

This usually consisted of members of three or more


generations.
The family property was not usually divided in such
cases but kept as common property and used for the
benefit of all members.
Elder member of family was the head. All rules and
regulations were vested in his hands.
Elders play an important role in making a good
family.
From elders the younger generations developed good
habits and they were considered as role models.

The members should obey the


authority of the head of the family.
He had the right to control and
maintain the family property.

Matriliny
Definition of matriliny : Practice of
training descent through mothers
line.
Contrasted with the patriliny traced
unilaterally through the father and a
male line.
Matriliny Family are found in south
and north-east. These Khasis of
Jayantika hills and Garos are the best

Patriliny
It is traced unilaterally through the
father and male line.
In a family if the elder child is a boy
his Fathers property will go to his
hands
This system is more inclined to the
empowerment of the male genre.

Conclusion
Members of family have their own
rights and responsibilities as children
you deserve love and protection from
your parents
The right of members shall be
strengthened by the presence of a
family.
