Liquid shim
Use to fill gap between solid parts to:
- ensure a good landing of the repair parts and minimize
interlaminar stresses due to clamp-up.
- optimize load distribution through the fasteners.

REPAIR PARTS INSTALLATION

FASTENERS INSTALLATION

Large gaps may create:

excessive bolt bending
non-uniform bearing stresses
eccentric load path.
Fastener installation is always done after liquid shim cure
Release agent is applied in the interface area on the repaired part before
liquid shim application and curing.
Release agent removed after liquid shim curing and before repair parts
installation.
For bolted repairs in tank area, all repair parts are installed with sealant (in
addition to liquid shim when requested)

SEALING / JOINTING

SRM 51-24-00 and 51-76-11 define the Sealing/jointing

procedures and materials.

During fastener and washer installation, ensure the sealant does

not get on the bolt threads or the contacting faces of the washer
and nut/collar as it could cause incorrect pre-tension to be applied
to the fastener.
