• According to traditional
design, the garden combines
three elements which represent
the earth: stone represents
mountains and islands for
strength and support, water is
the center and represents
purity, and plants grace it with
texture, color and growth.
Importance of stones and
lanterns
• Stones are use to beautify the
surrounding. These stones
represent different symbols
like natural, mood, idea,
spiritual, and melodic
symbols.
• Buddhist temple were
decorated with lanterns made
up stones and bronze. These
lanterns were represented on
the eve of festivals.
Typical features
• Typical Japanese gardens have at their
center a home from which the garden is
viewed. In addition to residential
architecture, Japanese gardens often contain
several of these elements:
Water, real or symbolic.
Rocks.
A lantern, typically of stone.
A teahouse or pavilion.
An enclosure device such as a hedge, fence, or wall
of traditional character.
A bridge to the island, or stepping stones.
Styles
• Japanese gardens might fall into one of
these styles:
Kanshoh-style gardens which are viewed from a
residence.
Pond gardens, for viewing from a boat.
Tea gardens, for viewing from a path which
leads to a tea ceremony hut.
4 Strolling gardens, for viewing a sequence of effects
from a path which circumnavigates the garden.
