Introduction
• Japanese gardens, These garden is made by Zen
Buddisht for worship and meditation Japanese
garden are famous in the world for its unique
style, natural and spritual beauty and calmness..
• that is, garden in traditional Japanese style, can
be found at private homes, in neighborhood or
city parks, and at historical landmark such as
Buddisht temples and old castles.
History of Japanese garden
The garden have passed through different
developmental phase under the influence
of religion, culture and linking of rulers of
different era.
The main historical periods are as follow-
Historical period

• Asuka Period (538- 794 A.D)

• Heian Period (794- 1185 A.D)


• Kamakura Period (1186- 1399 A.D)
• Ashikaga Period (1400-1600 A.D)
• Edo Period (1615-1867 A.D )
• Meiji Era (1876- 1912 A.D)
Types of Japanese garden
• Hill garden
• Tea garden
• Flat garden
• Passage garden
• Sand garden
Hill garden
• In Japanese language they are
called hill and water because
main features of such gardens are
hills, streams, and ponds along
with other features. The main
element of these gardening are:-
1 Trees
2 Ornamental water
3 Garden lanterns
4 Garden pagoda
5 Garden bridges
Tea garden

• A garden attached to tea


house is called tea
garden.The tea garden is
divided into three section
viz.,sotoraji, machi and
Uchiro ji. The guests are
visited in the tea garden for
the religious discourse or
advice.
• The inner garden is made
simple and natural. Garden
objects like stones, lanterns,
rocks, water basins are used
to give antiques.
Flat garden
• These are called Hira Niwa
in Japanese language. Such
garden are devoid of hills,
streams or ponds. Flat
gardens are mostly planned
for confined places or for
laying out in front of
building of secondary
importance .
• Other garden ornaments like
stones, wells, water basin,
trees, etc. can be used.
Passage garden
• In such garden there is
hardly any ornamental
such as lanterns, basin, or
other man made features.
The common feature of a
passage garden are a few
key rocks, slabs of stones,
and a few couple of
plants.
Sand garden
• It is the simplest type of
garden, though not liked by
many as it is totally devoid
of plants.The garden consist
of a rectangular area of about
350 meter square.the main
feature of this garden is to
arrange a few vertical and
prostrate stones in the groups
of 2-3 and fill the gape
between the stones with fine
white gravel.

Garden design

• According to traditional
design, the garden combines
three elements which represent
the earth: stone represents
mountains and islands for
strength and support, water is
the center and represents
purity, and plants grace it with
texture, color and growth.
Importance of stones and
lanterns
• Stones are use to beautify the
surrounding. These stones
represent different symbols
like natural, mood, idea,
spiritual, and melodic
symbols.
• Buddhist temple were
decorated with lanterns made
up stones and bronze. These
lanterns were represented on
the eve of festivals.
Typical features
• Typical Japanese gardens have at their
center a home from which the garden is
viewed. In addition to residential
architecture, Japanese gardens often contain
several of these elements:
Water, real or symbolic.
Rocks.
A lantern, typically of stone.
A teahouse or pavilion.
An enclosure device such as a hedge, fence, or wall
of traditional character.
A bridge to the island, or stepping stones.
Styles
• Japanese gardens might fall into one of
these styles:
Kanshoh-style gardens which are viewed from a
residence.
Pond gardens, for viewing from a boat.
Tea gardens, for viewing from a path which
leads to a tea ceremony hut.
4 Strolling gardens, for viewing a sequence of effects
from a path which circumnavigates the garden.
