•Communication is the transmitting

and sharing of information through

a shared system of signals or
symbols.

What are your strengths and

weaknesses as a communicator?
Aim: To gain an understanding of
the different components of
effective communication
 Objectives:
 To define models of communication and their
use within overcoming barriers to learning
 To explain the inter-related components of
effective communication
 To evaluate personal use of communication
skills to over come barriers to learning

A simple model of communication –

Sender – Receiver model
Encoding and decoding

 Find
a partner –someone you don’t
normally work with and sit as instructed.
Barriers to effective communication
within the Sender-Receiver model
 Motivation – have you explained why the
learning is important? (aims and obs)
 Ideas – Are you, the teacher, clear and
organised about the idea you are
communicating?
 Encoding – Are you blinding your learners
with jargon or technical language?
Barriers to effective communication
within the Sender-Receiver model
 Transmission – Is your transmission effective?
Consider the pace and volume of your voice, the
visibility of the teaching aids, the size and layout
of the room, the ability of the learners to see and
hear.

 Decoding – Are you checking that your learners

understand your message? Are you using a
variety of methods to do this?
Lasswell’s model of communication
(1948)
 Who? – The teacher brings their own
personal biography to the process
 What? – What is your message –
are you clear?
 To whom? – Who are your learners?
 How? – Teaching and learning methods.
 Why? Do you know why you are teaching
this particular element and have you
shared your reasons with the learners?
Overcoming barriers to learning
 Think of a session that you have recently
taught.
 Using Lasswell’s model see if you can
answer each question (Who? What? To
whom? How? Why?) and for each
question identify an area for improvement.
 Use the model to analyse the planning,
delivery and effectiveness of your
session. Start with Who? and How?
Therefore, from a single communication, different
learning amongst individual listeners may occur
(including non-learning). The models of
communication can help us to analyse where the
potential barriers to learning lie.

Where does this leave inclusive

practice?
The components of effective
communication in the classroom –
Non Verbal Communication

 Eye movement and eye contact

 Gestures
 Posture
 Proximity and orientation
 Facial expression
The components of effective
communication in the classroom
 Activelistening skills
 Empathy and adaptation
 Speaking and structure
 Use of voice
 Gaining attention
 Enthusiasm about the topic
 Communicating within a clear context.
Evaluating your own
communication skills
 Evaluate your own strengths and
development needs in terms of
communication skills.
 What actions can you take to improve your
communication and therefore your
teaching?
