ABOUT THE AUTHOR

George Bernard Shaw (26 July 1856 2 November 1950)

was an Irish playwright and a co-founder of the London
School of Economics. His first profitable writing was
music and literary criticism, in which he wrote many
pieces of journalism, his main talent was for drama, and
he wrote more than 60 plays. He was also an essayist,
novelist and short story writer. Nearly all his writings
address prevailing social problems with a vein of comedy.
Issues which engaged Shaw's attention included
education, marriage, religion, government, health care,
and class privilege.

He is the only person to have been awarded both a Nobel

Prize in Literature and Academy Award for his
contributions to literature. Shaw turned down all other
awards and honours.

Some prominent personality traits that he had were

Honesty, critical, educated, observant, generally liberal,
believer of class equality, excellent public speaker,
socialist, etc.

SUMMARY
The essay is divided into three parts :
The first part include there is no single model of
correct English.
The second part illustrates how irrespective of
whether they are educated or uneducated.
And the last section, Shaw advises foreigners
on how to communicate in English.

accent used in traditional English).

CONFESSION OF BERNARD SHAW

In this part, Bernard explains how everyone

speaks differently in public and in private.

He gives his example that as a public
speaker, he has to take care that every word
that he says is understood by his listeners.
But at home, when he speaks to his wife he
takes very little pains with his speech.
Main difference is Speech.
Although Shaw is concerned with English
language, his arguments in both the first and
second part are applicable to any other
language.

SHAWS ADVICE TO
FOREIGNERS
In the last section, Shaw advises foreigners on how to
communicate in English while travelling in English speaking
countries.
Shaw tells that its not necessary for foreign students to learn
English who intend to travel in England and wish to be
understood there, they must not try to speak English
perfectly, because if they do, no one will understand them.
He specifically tells that there is no such thing as perfectly
correct English, there is presentable English which is called
good English, but in London nine hundred and ninety-nine
out of every thousand people not only speak bad English but
speak even that very badly.
Therefore the first thing a foreigner has to do is to speak with
a strong foreign stress, and speak broken English, that is
English without grammar. Then every English person to
whom he speaks will know that he is a foreigner and will try
to understand him and help him.

WHAT A LISTENER SHOULD

TAKE FROM THE SPEECH
There is no such thing as perfect English. There only

is presentable English.
The only way to perfect your speech is by trying to
speak with a strong accent and broken English-which
is English without grammar.
The manner of speaking of one is different in different
circumstances- family , office and socializing with
friends are different situations where one speaks
distinctly different from the other.
The important thing is to get the listener to
understand what you are saying rather than using
perfect English and the person remaining clueless.
Being a foreigner, speaking perfectly to a native would
also feel a little insulting if the native seems not to
now his own language that well.

SIGNIFICANCE IN TODAYS
LIFE
With the globalization there is a need for learning a global
language.
George Bernard Shaw insults that the native speakers of English
that is the British, they cannot understand their own language.
No two British people speak exactly the same.
Indians should realize the true sense of the language.
So it is very important in todays time that we emphasize on
speaking correct English rather than good English.

CONCLUSION
In todays modern world the speech

spoken English and broken English is

no longer used.
The modern time has impacted us in a
positive way but our communication skills
have suffered a lot.
Thus by studying this piece can help us
understand the basis of this language and
help us communicating effectively.
