OPTIMIZATION OF COOLING LOAD IN AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION
Energy consumption, one of the main
problems in present days for conservation
and environment safety.
This problem is mainly due to energy
consumption by industries, buildings and
laboratories.
Around 73% of the total world energy is
consumed by industry, residential houses,
commercial building, infrastructure and
markets.
In an air-conditioned large building, about
65% of the total energy requirement is
allocated for the airconditioning plant2

OBJECTIVE
The main objectives of HVAC system design are as
follows:
Control of temperature, humidity, air purity and
correct pressurization to avoid contamination.
Provide
comfort
environment.

and

healthy

indoor

Provide special air filtration for removing

bacteria, high indoor quality, avoid cross
contamination.

HVAC SYSTEMS
The HVAC system provides the year-round control of
the indoor environment to maintain specified
conditions for a certain application.
The configuration of HVAC system is a schematic
design
that
determines
the
type,
number,
arrangement of different components and the
operational strategy to meet the building comfort
requirements.
Each component in the configuration is dedicated to
perform a certain task of the overall system.
However, the design of HVAC system is also driven by
a number of different criteria, such as costs, energy
consumption, indoor air quality, and thermal
comfort.

CLASSIFICATION OF HVAC
SYSTEMS
HVAC systems can be classified in two major
categories, such as conventional and
innovative/alternative systems.
Conventional systems are generally electrical
driven and based on CFCs and HCFCs
refrigerants.
In view of increasing energy demands and
environmental
problems
associated
with
conventional systems, innovative/alternative
systems operated with renewable and low
grade energy resources are proved as obvious
choice for achieving comfort conditions.

Mostly, HVAC systems are categorized based on

the fluid
media used in the thermal distribution system.
The four types of such HVAC systems are:
All-air HVAC systems
Air-water HVAC systems
All water HVAC systems
Refrigerant-based

HVAC

systems

(Unitary

systems)

PROPOSED SYSTEM
The work has been done to reduce the
cooling coil load by providing the chilled
water configuration. The chilled water
systems consist of primary HVAC system
components, such as chillers, cooling towers
and pumps and account for most of the
energy use in HVAC systems.
The optimization of chilled water at the
initial design stage can significantly
enhance the overall energy saving potential
of HVAC systems.

MODEL DEVELOPMENT

The design parameters of all components specified

according to the specifications of the fan and coil
used.
Each of them are inter connected due to their
variation in loads.
High Loads required high rating Fan and high Coil
RD.
So the design parameter are inter connected.
The weight of rotor coating and the mass of
aluminium foil shall a ratio to ensure nearly equal
recovery of both sensible and latent heat over the
operating range.
The rotor made of alternate flat corrugated
aluminium foil of uniform width.

The wheel matrix- be only of pure aluminium foil, and

not from any material, and follows

a) Quick and efficient uptake of thermal

energy
b) Sufficient mass for optimum heat transfer
c) Maximum sensible heat recovery at a
relatively low rotational
speed of 20-30 rpm.
The wheel should be Ecosorb 300 (3A) type belonging
to the molecular sieve family.
The desiccant of sufficient mass-coated with nonmasking porous binder adhesive on the aluminium.
By use of wheel the total load will be minimized.

APPLICATIONS

The optimal supply air temperature and flow rate are

calculated based on the cooling load and ambient
dry-bulb temperature profiles. Optimization is
performed by using empirically-based models of the
air conditioning system components for energy
savings. Due to these, optimization have a lot
applications in moving towards green automation in
commercial buildings, small and medium sized
buildings as well.

CONCLUSION

In the current study, an incremental development of the

methodology for chilled water system optimization is
proposed. Hence for adopting this procedure the chiller
cost of HRW unit will be minimized as well as its operating
cost. This procedure was adopted at full load condition of
both units. Hence maximum value can be taken for the
future reference. Operating chilled water systems at the
optimal conditions could result in significant total system
power savings amounting up to 33.5% for the considered
cases.
The implemented automated simulation-based optimization
approach proved efficient in terms of model development
and computational time to find optimal configurations. The
methodology represents a step towards the design of
software systems which ables to synthesize new and
optimal HVAC system configurations. Such development
should help the design practitioners to select the optimal
16
system configuration parameters at the initial stage.
