Thank you for coming

Thank you for all of your hard work at home.
Your children have made some amazing
accomplishments this year!
I hope you found the activities helpful and today,
you will receive two more activities, so you can
continue to support your childs learning at
home during the summer.

Our Last Meeting:

At our last meeting, we looked at letter
recognition, letter sounds, number recognition and
writing our name.
Take a minute to think about how practice went
for you and your child at home.
Did you play the games or do other activities to
practice?
Do you think your child reached his or her 60-day
goal?
Lets find out

Looking towards K2

Literacy Focus:
HIGH FREQUENCY WORD RECOGNITION
K.MA3.C: READ COMMON HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS
BY SIGHT

BEGINNING READING SKILLS

K.MA4: READ EMERGENT READER TEXTS WITH
PURPOSE AND UNDERSTANDING

What are High Frequency

Words?
High frequency words are the most commonly used words in the
English language. They are the words that readers will see most
often in texts.

Why is this important?

It is important for beginning readers to learn these words so they
can read them on sight rather than attempting to decode them.
This makes reading more fluent.
Students use high frequency words, decoding skills, and other
reading
strategies (looking at pictures/recognizing repetitive text) to read
simple texts.

CVC Word Assessment

Consonant Vowel Consonant Words

Math Focus:
BEGINNING ADDITION and
SUBTRACTION: Operations
and Algebraic Thinking

K.OA: Understand addition as putting

together and adding to, and
understand subtraction as taking
apart and taking from.

1. Represent addition and subtraction

with objects, fingers, mental images

2. Solve addition and subtraction word

problems, and add and subtract
within 10

3. Fluently add and subtract within 5.

What is beginning
addition/subtraction?
Adding/subtracting
single digit numbers.

Why is this
important?

Mentally

Students must be able to

add and subtract fluently with
understanding as

Using fingers/picture
representations/number line
Understanding that addition is the
combining of two quantities.
Understanding that subtraction is
the opposite of additiontaking
away.

they continue on to more

complicated math such as
algebra.

the math game.)

say the first sound/letter.
High frequency words and
CVC Pictures:

wordread it. If you land on a
picturespell it (out loud or on a
white board).

Math Dice Game

important if your child is still
working on number
recognition).
Solve the equation by:
Using the number line.
Using fingers.
Placing counters, such as
cheerios, in the box.
Drawing in the box with
a dry erase marker.
Write the solution in the box
after the equals sign.

Some More Ideas for Helping Your

Child Stay on Track Over the
Summer:(prevent summer learning
loss)
Incorporate these skills into your everyday routines:
When you are having a snack with your child, make two
groups and ask: How many all together?
Play board or card games with your child, like Chutes and
Ladders, Uno, or Go Fish; do puzzles.
Visit the East Boston Library and take out books to read at home.
Select books your child read to you.
Try reading a chapter book with your child.

From the K-2 Team

Entering K2, it is helpful for students to:

Have a strong knowledge of letters and sounds.
RHYMEThis is very important as they begin to spell.
Read rhyming books and nursery rhymes.
Have a good understanding of print concepts: reading
from left to right, words vs. letters
Recognize and write the numbers from 0-25.

Summer Work Packet for

Kindergarten 1 Students

Hello families: Enclosed is a packet for your student to work

on over the summer to help prepare them for kindergarten 2
and continue practicing skills. This packet includes practice
with name, letters, phonics, high frequency words, math,
handwriting and storytelling writing. Please work on a little at
a time throughout the summer and return it to me on the
first day of school.

Students should also continue to work on the computer

program Lexia Core 5 and Building Blocks over the summer.

Have a fabulous summer filled with learning and fun!
