Introduction to computers
A computer is an electronic device that:

Monitor: is an output device. T.V. like screen
used to show pictures and words

CPU: is processing device, Central


Processing Unit this is where most of the
computers calculations take place. In terms
of computing power, the CPU is the most
important element of a computing system

Keyboard: is an input device. This device is


used to type information into the computer

Mouse: is an input device. A small device,
which you move across the top of the desk to
move the pointer or cursor on the screen

Printer: is an output device, used to make a


paper copy of the information into the

Windows 8 Desktop
Once you are logged in, you will see the new Windows 8 Start Screen,
which is the home page of your Windows 8 PC. No longer will you see
the familiar desktop, your favorite wallpaper, the task bar or the start
button. The Start Screen is the new program launcher and
replacement of start menu as we have seen in earlier version of
Windows

Show Desktop
To show the Desktop you can click the lower-right corner of the
screen to minimize all open windows
Move the mouse to the lower-right corner of the screen and click

Start Screen
To see and access all your installed apps, when you are on the
Windows 8 Start Screen, simply right click on an empty part of your
start screen

While on the desktop, when you move the cursor to the bottom left
corner, you get the option to visit Start Screen. When you right-click
here, you will get a menu option, offering quick links to Explorer,
Control Panel, Search, Task Manager, Run and so on
Think of the Start Screen as your new Start Menu and to bring it up,
click the Win Flag key. Clicking on the Win Flag key, will alternatively
bring up the start screen and the desktop

Shutting down Windows 8


To shut down Windows 8, bring your cursor to the top right corner to
bring up the Charms bar

Here click on Settings > Power. Here you will see the options to
Shutdown, Sleep or Restart your computer

Folder Create folder


A folder is a location where you can store your files. You can create any
number of folders and even store folders inside other folders
(subfolders). Heres how to create a new folder:
File Explorer (previously called Windows Explorer) helps you work with
files and folders on your OneDrive, PC, and network
Open File Explorer by swiping in from the right edge of the screen,
tapping Search (or if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right
corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking
Search), entering File Explorer in the search box, and then tapping or
clicking File Explorer

Click on New folder, type folder name and press Enter

Sort folders/files
In Windows 8, auto arrange is enabled by default so that all file and
folder names in File Explorer are sorted alphabetically no matter what
folder view you used.
To enable or disable auto arrange for a specific folder, you can right
click or press and hold on an empty area in the folder, click/tap on
View, then click/tap on Auto arrange to uncheck (disable) or check
(enable) it for that specific folder.

Creating List - Bullet and Numbering


To use bullets and numbering, select the lines for which you want
bullets/numbers, Select Format -> Bullets and Numbering or click on
the Bullets and Numbering icon

Changing cell background color
Select cells A2 - D2 on the spreadsheet
Click on the Background Color icon on the Formatting toolbar
(looks like a paint can) to open the background color drop down list.
Choose Sea Blue from the list to change the background color of
cells A2 - D2 to blue
Drag select cells A8 - D8 on the spreadsheet

Formulas and Functions


Calc can handle calculations from very simple summing (adding) to
very complicated multi-formula calculations
Calc uses Formulas to perform calculations
All formulas begin with = equal sign

The most common function is SUM, which calculates a list (either


across or down) of numbers

Check if the computer is receiving power. Check both ends of the
power cord
Check all of your connections. Make sure both ends of your cables are
inserted correctly. You can unplug and replug cables without damaging
a computer
Check if Monitors power cable is plugged properly and Monitor is
switched ON
All devices (Mouse, Keyboard, Speakers, others) are connected with
CPU
LAN cable is connected with correct port and light is blinking where the
LAN cable is plugged in computer
