Ganga Action Plan

The Ganga action plan was, launched byShri Rajeev
Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India on 14 Jan. 1986 with the
main objective of pollution abatement, to improve the water
quality by Interception, Diversion and treatment of domestic
sewage and present toxic and industrial chemical wastes
from identified grossly polluting units entering in to the
river. The other objectives of the Ganga Action Plan are as
under.
Control of non-point pollution from agricultural run off,
human defecation, cattle wallowing and throwing of unburnt
and half burnt bodies into the river.

The Ganges
Trans-boundary river of India and
Bangladesh
The 2,525 km river rises in the
Western Himalayas in the Indian
State of Uttarakhand and flows
South East through the Gangetic
Plain of North India into
Bangladesh, where it empties into
the Bay of Bengal.
The Ganges Basin is the most
heavily populated river basin in the
world, with over 400 million people
and a population density of about
1000 inch.

Scientific significance of
the Ganga

During festival seasons,

people bath in the Ganges
to cleanse themselves from
their sins.

A Hindu belief is that

dropping the ashes of
cremated bodies in the
Ganga would give Liberation
of the sole.

Some studies have reported

that the river retains more
oxygen than is typical for
comparable rivers; this
could be a factor leading to

Environmental problems
The Ganges was ranked
among the top five most
polluted rivers of the world
in 2007, with fecal
coliform levels in the river
near Varanasi more than
100 times the official
Indian govt. limits.
Pollution threatens not
only humans, but also
more than 140 fish
species, 90 amphibian
species and the

Water Quality of River Ganga

Water quality can be
characterized by mainly
following parameters:

Dissolve oxygen

Biological oxygen
demand

Chemical oxygen demand

Fecal coliform

Point Sources
Sewage effluent
discharge
Domestic waste
Industrial effluents
Overflow and leakage of
Nallahs
Leather industries

Clean Ganga- A Ray Of Hopes!!

PM- Narendra Modi had
vowed to come out with a
plan to bring back the lost
glory of Ganga during his
campaign in Varanasi and
now his government is
planning a policy initiative
to check pollution in the
mighty river

Conclusion
Due to excessive sewage discharge, industrial and
domestic waste at various places, the quality and
sacredness of Ganges has degraded.
Aerobic microbial activity has reduced the dissolve
oxygen and increased the biological oxygen demand.
Damming along the river at various places has reduced
its carrying capacity to dissolve harmful things.
