Congenital affection of lower jaw
and treatment

AFFECTIONS OF THE JAW


Gnathitis
Inflammation of the interdental space in horse
due to injury caused by bits.

Treatment:
Discontinue
usage of bits.

Fracture of hyoid bone


It is an uncommon condition .

Etiology

Kick.
Horn injuries.
Violent traction of tongue in dogs.
Strangulation.
Hyoid bone with larynx

Symptoms
Increased salivation.
Prolapse of the tongue.
Dysphagia.

Increased salivation.

Swelling of throat.
Bleeding due to laceration of hypoglossal or other
vessels.

Prognosis:

Cont.,

Subcutaneous fracture heals with in 4 weeks .


Sometimes it may result in fatal Haemorrhage.

Treatment:
Simple fracture No treatment ,Semi liquid
diet.

Wound is treated and loose bone spicules are


removed in case of multiple fractures.

Crib biting (wind sucking/ aerophagia)

It is an acquired habit or vice.


Horses grasps on object like
manger, door top ,or fence post
with incisors, Arches the neck
and sucks air.

Condition leads:

Incisor teeth erosion.

Digestive disturbances.
Colic and flatulence

Treatment

Prevention.
Throat straps.
Fluted bits.
Excising muscle inserting
on the hyoid bone, thereby
preventing air sucking.

Forsells operation:
Removal of at least 6-8 inch of sternocephalicus, sterno
and omohyoideus and sternothyroidius by making incision
from one to other jugular furrow.

It is rare in cattle and horses but common in dogs
It can be:

Unilateral
Bilateral
Partial
Complete
Peripheral
Central

Etiology

Rabies
CNS tumour,
haematoma, exudates
CD

Symptoms:
Loss of mastication
power

CONT.,
Unilateral paralysis:
Lower jaw is deviated to the affected

side

Prehension and tongue movement are normal


Mastication is interfered

Unilateral facial paralysis

Bilateral paralysis :

Incomplete masticatory movement


Total loss of muscle power
Dropped lower jaw
Loss of sensation in temporal region,
cheeks, teeth, lips and chin.

CONT.,
Prognosis:
If it is central, prognosis is guarded

Differential Diagnosis:
Dislocation of lower jaw

Treatment:
If it is due to rabies no
treatment is attempted.
In other cases nervine stimulants
can be given.
