A DINOSAUR EXIBITION

SUBJECT : ENGLISH

T REX
DINOSAUR: T-REX

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
The Tyrannosaurus Rex (T-Rex) was a giant animal. They were about 15 feet tall and 40 feet

long. That is a little bit longer than a typical school bus. Tyrannosaurus Rexes were one of the
largest land meat eating animals (carnivores) of all time. They had an S Curve neck like most
dinosaurs; however it was very muscular to support its giant head. The T Rexes head alone
was 5 feet in length. They walked on two legs, and had very small forelimbs compared to the
rest of the body. The tail of a T-rex was also very large.
The Tyrannosaurus Rex had a very long stride at about 13 feet long which enabled the huge

dinosaur to run from 15 to 25 miles per hour. Its large tail acted as a huge counterbalance that
enabled the dinosaur to turn quickly. The Tyrannosaurus weighed in at a massive 6 to 8 tons.
That is the equivalent of about 3 cars. To fill its appetite it had to eat very large, slower
animals. Its top prey were the larger marginocephalians and ornithopods. He ate with 50 very
large (up to 9 inches) teeth.

T. rex's Diet
T. rex skullT. rex was a meat-eater and was at the top of the food chain in its environment. It
probably chased its prey and took huge bites of their flesh, mortally wounded the prey, then
devoured it. Its huge jaws and powerful, clawed legs were its lethal weapons. T. rex's tiny
arms may not have played much of a part in the kill.

ERA

THE EARTH 65 MILLION YEARS AGO.T. REX LIVED DURING THE LATE CRETACEOUS PERIOD, ABOUT 85
MILLION TO 65 MILLION YEARS AGO, TOWARD THE END OF THE MESOZOIC ERA, THE AGE OF REPTILES.
DURING THIS TIME, THE EARTH WAS SEISMICALLY ACTIVE; THERE WERE MANY VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS. THE
SUPERCONTINENT PANGAEA HAD BROKEN UP AND THE SUBCONTINENTS LAURASIA AND GONDWANA
WERE DRIFTING FARTHER APART. THERE WERE NO POLAR ICE CAPS, THE SEA LEVEL WAS MUCH HIGHER
THAN IT IS NOW, AND THE CLIMATE WAS WARMER.
T. REX WAS AMONG THE LAST OF THE DINOSAUR SPECIES TO EVOLVE BEFORE THE CRETACEOUSTERTIARY (K-T) EXTINCTION 65 MILLION YEARS AGO. AMONG THE CONTEMPORARIES OF TYRANNOSAURUS
WERE TRICERATOPS (WHICH WAS PROBABLY PREYED UPON BY T. REX), ANKYLOSAURUS (AN ARMORED
HERBIVORE), MAIASAURA (A PLANT-EATER), EDMONTONIA (A PLATED DINOSAUR), ANATOTITAN (A DUCKBILLED DINOSAUR), PACHYCEPHALOSAURUS(A CRESTED, PLANT-EATING DINOSAUR),
PARASAUROLOPHUS(A DUCK-BILLED DINOSAUR), QUETZALCOATLUS (A HUGE FLYING REPTILE, NOT A
DINOSAUR), CORYTHOSAURUS (A HELMET-CRESTED, DUCK-BILLED DINOSAUR), STYRACOSAURUS, AND
MANY MORE BIZARRE CREATURES.
