Continent is a large landmass located
on the surface of the earth.
The world is divided into seven
continents: Asia, Africa, Europe, North
America, South America, Australia
and Antarctica.

How the
Continents
were formed
The continents are
like the pieces of
jigsaw puzzle which
can be put together
to form one vast
landmass.

According to the concept of


Continental Drift theory by Alfred
Wegener, continents are just part of
one huge continent millions of years

North - Arctic ocean
South Indian Ocean
East Pacific Ocean
West - Ural Mountains, Caspian Sea, Black Sea,
Mediterranean Sea, and Red Sea
Largest continent in terms of land area and
population.

The name Asia came from the Akkadian
word aser which means to rise.
It comprises almost one-third of the worlds
land area.
The Northern region of Asia has a cold
climate.
The Pacific Ring of Fire is located on the
eastern part of Asia.

Western Asia is composed of vast deserts
but the region is rich in oil.
Saudi Arabia has the largest oil reserves in
the region.

East Red Sea and Isthmus of Suez
West Atlantic Ocean
Second largest continent in the world in terms
of land area and population.

Africa
It comes from the word Africa terra which means
land of the Afri.
Some scholars say that Africa came from the
Latin word aprica or sunny or in the Greek word
aphrike which pertains to no winter.
Africa is one of the hottest places in the world.
The largest country in Africa is Sudan; while the
smallest is Seychelles.

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain
in the world which is 19,340 feet in height.
It is found in Tanzania.

North America

South Caribbean Sea and South America
East North Atlantic Ocean
West North Pacific Ocean

It is the third largest continent in the


world.

The name America came from the Italian
writer and voyager Amerigo Vespucci who
left accounts of his expedition in the
northern coast of South America in 1499
and 1500.
The word America was first used by
German geographer Martin Waldseemuller.

North America
North Americas highest peak is Mt. McKinley.
It rises 20,320 feet above sea level.
In terms of climate, the North American
people experience extreme climate.
Those who lived in the upper region of the
continent have a very cold climate, while those
who are in the lower region have dry climate.

South America

South America

North Caribbean Sea and North America
South Drake Passage
East South Atlantic Ocean
West South Pacific Ocean
It is the fourth largest continent in the world and
considered as the twin continent of North
America.

South America
In South America, the highest mountain is Mt.
Aconcagua in Argentina with a height of 22,834
feet.
Its largest country is Brazil which has a land area
of 8,514,877 km.
The longest mountain range in the world can also
be found in this continent. The Andes Mountain
Range has a length of more than 8,000 km.

South America
The continent also has the largest
rainforest as well as the second longest
river in the world, the Amazon jungle and
river.
The continent also keeps the highest falls
in the world, the Angel Falls which is 3,212
feet in height.

Antarctica

Antarctica
It is the only continent that has no permanent
recorded population.
It is the fifth largest continent in the world.
Its climate is extremely cold. Ice cup buries
nearly 98% of Antarcticas land area.
The coldest temperature was recorded in
Vostok, mercury drops at -89.2C in July 1983.

It is the second smallest continent in the world


which is made up of peninsulas, mountain ranges,
islands, bays, and plains.

Europe
The name Europe originated from the Akkadian
word erebu which means sunset.
Based on Greek mythology, the name Europe
came from a princess named Europa who was
taken by Zeus and was brought to Crete in the
Mediterranean region.
The Mediterranean Sea and the Strait of
Gibraltar separate Europe from Africa.

United Kingdom is considered as an
archipelago off the Northwest coast of the
continent.
Europe is considered as the most developed
among the continents in the world.
Most European countries have progressive
economies and have high standard of living.

Australia

Boundaries:
North Timor Sea, Indonesia, and Papua New
Guinea
East Tasman Sea and Coral Sea
West Indian Ocean
This is the smallest continent in the world.
It is the only place on earth that is both a
continent and a country.

Australia
The continent has a vast dry and flat land.
In terms of population, most people live in
coastal cities such as in Sydney and
Melbourne which are located in the eastern
region of the continent.
