INTRODUCTION

The terminology cycloidal comes

from the cycloidal path described by
the blades. The rotor consists of
several blades rotating about a
horizontal axis perpendicular to the
direction of normal flight.
The angle of the individual blades to
the tangent of the circle of the
blades path is varied by a pitch.

Mechanism

Figure shows one of the blade pitch control

mechanisms appropriate for the hovering
states. Control mechanism schematic for low
pitch system.
All the blades rotate about the point O, but
each blade has individual pitching motion by
the linkage rod giving benefits in terms of
upward force generation.

High Altitude Cycloidal Wind Turbine

System
Balloon Tethered Wind Turbine
A tethered balloon is applied to lift the cycloidal wind
turbine system. The balloon is filled with buoyant helium gas
and it is assumed as spherical shape. The cycloidal wind
turbine with electric power generator is located below the
balloon. The rotating axis is parallel to the tethering cable. A
set of winch devices on the ground holds the airborne system
using the tether line.

High Altitude Cycloidal Wind Turbine

System
Parafoil Tethered Wind Turbine
A tethered parafoil is applied to cycloidal rotor
as shown in. The cycloidal rotor is mounted at
the parafoil with a way that its axis is parallel to
the ground, which means 90 degrees different
from the balloon tethered model. The rotor
generates lifting force at low altitude to make the
whole system go up to the target altitude. Then,
the rotor changes its mode to produce electricity.

CFD analysis of cycloidal rotor

CFD - An Introduction
Computational Fluid Dynamics, or simply CFD is
concerned with obtaining numerical solution to fluid flow
problems by using computers. The advent of high-speed
and large-memory computers has enabled CFD to obtain
solutions to many flow problems including those that are
compressible or incompressible, laminar or turbulent,
chemically reacting or non-reacting.
The equations governing the fluid flow problem are the
continuity (conservation of mass), the Navier-Stokes
(conservation of momentum), and the energy equations.

CFD analysis of cycloidal rotor

Objective
The aerodynamic researches of the flow field around
a cycloidal rotor used in cyclopters are based on such
assumptions as of flow velocity and that of the
internal-rotor flow. The objective of this research is to
evaluate the difference between the analytic and
experimental results and to investigate the cause

CFD analysis of cycloidal rotor

Overview
CFD-ANSYS was used as the CFD
analysis tool. The Chimera grid
module was used to generate mesh
of the flow field near the blade and
the moving grid module was used to
realize the pitching motion of each
blade. The final model was analyzed

Conclusion
In this study, we investigated cycloidal propulsion
system capable of vertical flight. The system
equipped with low pitch control mechanism which
has less complexity in terms of realization, was
designed and tested in hover condition to verify the
performance.
Mechanic components were designed in 3D CAD
tool and manufactured elaborately. Blades were made
of carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy composite materials
to have enough strength against centrifugal force.
