Period of Development
The period of development for the
Lincoln Elementary School is Middle
Childhood: from 6 to 11 years old.
Children learn about the wider world
and master new responsibilities that
increasingly resemble those they will
perform as adults. (Berk, 2013)
Hallmarks of this period are improved
athletic abilities, participation in
organized games with rules; more
logical thought processes; mastery of
fundamental reading, writing, math
and other academic knowledge and
skills; and advances in understanding
the self, morality and friendship.
(Berk, 2013)

Role as a Child Development professional

As a child development professional it is our job to guide

the children, listen to them and understand them. We need

to ask questions to get their minds working.
We should have good communication with the children and
build a relationship with them and their parents.
It is important to have a safe environment and have
activities and discussions that interests the children.

Rationale

As a child Development professional it is important to have a good communication with

the children's families. We need to let the parents know that they are their child's first
teachers. It is important for them to have good communication. There are parenting
classes available for the parents.
It is important for the parents to volunteer at their childs school. The child benefits
when the parents are academically involved in their life.
As a head start teacher we give the parents in-kind packets and literacy bags for them to
work at home with their child. We explain to them what they need to do if they need
help we let them know that they could come any time and will be more than happy to
help.
We will also be making decisions that will benefit the children and make sure that the
students rights are protected. We will also be giving the families resources about the
community programs, which are; community health clinics, and community activities
for the families.

Mesosystem from Bronfenbrenners Ecological System

The second level of

Bronfenbrenners model, the

mesosystem, encompasses
connections between Microsystems,
such as home, school,
neighborhood, and child care
center.
It is important for the parents to be
involved in their child's life
academically. The child needs
support from their parents not just
their teachers. The parent also
needs to be fully involved in their
childs life, they need to have a good
relationship and communication as
well as meet their friends.

Epsteins Types of Involvement

Epstein created a parental involvement in education

which involves not only educators and parents but also the
wider community beyond the school yard. (Ramos, 2016)
The six types are:
Type 1. Parenting
Type 2. Communication
Type 3. Volunteering
Type 4. Learning At Home
Type 5. Decision Making
Type 6 Collaborating with Community

Type 1. Parenting
Type 1. Parenting helps all families establish home environments to support

children as students. Epstein's Types of Involvement

Parents should have a safe home for their children and care for them. They
need to show them good values so that their child can succeed in life
Parent must make sure their child is eating right, going to school on time,
and getting the right amount of sleep at night. Parent should make sure that
the child is doing his homework well, turning it in and doing good in school.
As a parent we need to make sure that are children are safe, and are
learning, we need to be involved in their school and home life.
By the parent showing them whats right and wrong and caring for their
child the child will be successful in school.
An idea would be if the parent needs help in how to parent their child they
could ask at the school if there are classes, workshops or some sort of
training for them.

Type 2. Communicating
Type 2. Communicating is to design effective forms of school-to-

home and home to-school communications about school programs

and children's progress. Epstein's Types of Involvement
Parents should have a good communication with their child and their
teacher. It is important to know how their child is doing at school.
Parents should attend all parent meetings if possible and must attend
parent teacher conferences.
When a parent is involved in their childs life, the child will succeed
and progress, staying involved in the child's; life is essential.
An idea would be for the parent to get their teachers number and ask
for a monthly calendar of the activities that will be going on for the
month.

Type 3. Volunteering
Type 3. Volunteering to recruit and organize parent help and

support.
Awareness of many skills, talents, occupations, and contributions
of parent and other volunteers. Epstein's Types of Involvement
It is important for the parents to make some time to volunteer at
the school, the children will be happy to have their parent helping
at their school.
By volunteering the children will be happy and want to learn more,
which means the child will be more successful in school.
An idea that could be implemented could be to let the parents
know, and remind them that they could come at any time and
volunteer at the school, it does not have to be an all day thing, as
long as they come for at least one hour.

Type 4. Learning at Home

Type 4. Learning at home is to provide information and ideas to families

about how to help students at home with homework and other curriculumrelated activities, decisions, and planning. Epstein's Types of Involvement
Parents should help their children at home with their homework as well as
with school projects.
Calendars are also a good for helping the child learn at home, like this the
parent can know when their homework and projects are due.
This type of involvement influences the child's learning because the parent is
helping him with his/her homework. There are some children that do not
need as much help but as a parent we need to be there to make sure that our
children understands and are doing their homework correctly.
An idea that could be implemented would be for the school or community to
have an after school program where the children can get help and that the
parents are able to go with them too if they are having trouble helping their
child with their homework.

Type 5. Decision Making

Type 5. Decision making includes parents in school

decisions, developing parent leaders and

representatives. Epstein's Types of Involvement
Parents should have an opinion when decision
making about their childs education.
Parents should know that their child's rights as a
student are protected.
An idea would be for the parents to be part of the
PTA, this way the parent can know what their child is
learning.

Type 6. Collaborating with Community

Type 6. Collaborating with community is to identify and integrate resources

and services from the community to strengthen school programs, family

practices, and student learning and development.
It is important for the children to learn about their community and how they
could help their community to be safer
The parents and their children could help recycle in their home, community
and at school. When my son was in preschool they had a vegetable garden,
when the vegetables were ready they would give them to families in need. At
my job we have clothes and school donations that are made by the staff and
parents. We also give them to the families in need.
By the children knowing about helping their community they will become
caring and keep our community clean.
An idea that could be implemented would be to have a food donation and
winter clothes donation now that the holidays and winter are coming. Some
families might not have winter clothes and food for their children.
