Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya(IGRMS) or National Museum


of Humankind or Museum of Manis ananthropologymuseum located inBhopal, India,
to present an integrated story of theevolution of manand culture with special reference
to India. It spreads over an area of about 200 acres on the Shyamla Hills in the city ]This
museum depicts the story of mankind in time and space. Located on Bhopal's upper lake,
'Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya' can be accessed either from Lake View Road or from
another road near Demonstration School. IGRMS has a few permanent exhibitions,
broadly categorized as a) Open-exhibitions, b) Indoor galleries (Veethi-Sankul and Bhopal
Gallery) and c) Periodical/ Temporary exhibitions..

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS (VEETHI SANKUL)


Veethi Sankul

This is constructed in about 12,000 sqm. area with


spacious exhibition halls, a reference library, indoor
& outdoor auditoriums and other miscellaneous
facilities, and dedicated to the nation in March,
2005. The structure is unique in its architecture,
constructed on a rocky terrain incorporating difficult
levels of the sloppy land. The various exhibition halls
and auditoriums have been constructed on
approximately 16 levels. The structure is covered
with Dholpur sand-stone cladding from all sides, and
the flooring is made with Kota stones. Approximately
7000 sq.mt. floor area is utilized for exhibitions, in
10 galleries. An important aspect of these galleries
are the active involvement of different community
groups in developing the exhibits, and their
presentations in appropriate environment. Another

The site for this Art Centre is on a
gently sloping hill overlooking the
lake in Bhopal. The natural
contours of the site have been used
to create a series of terraced
gardens and sunken courtyards- off
which are located a number of
cultural facilities, including a
museum of Tribal Art, a library of
Indian poetry, galleries for
Contemporary Art, workshops for
lithography and sculpture, and a
studio for an artist-in-residence

Section

Lighting and ventilation within the building are provided by top lights (from the concrete shells and from
slots along the terrace parapets). The openings to the courtyards and terraces have two sets of shutters;
the inner ones consisting of a combination of fixed glass and operable panels for light and ventilation; the
outer ones consisting of large wooden doors
