ABOUT B.T.P.S
Barauni Thermal Power Station is an
existing 320 megawatt coal-fired power
station owned by Bihar State power
generation company limited (BSPGCL).
The power station is located at Begusarai
district, Bihar, India.
Barauni thermal power station in Bihar
came into existence in association with
the Russian collaboration in the year
1962.

coal is supplied from Rajmahal coal

field and Urma Pahari tola,Jharkhand.
Currently two new units VIII and IX
are under construction which will
increase the power output by 500MW.
The equipments are supplied by
BHEL , Bhopal.
The electricity generated here is sold
to North Bihar Power Holding
company Ltd.

GENERATION UNITS AT B.T.PS

There are total seven units in B.T.P.S
Two units are currently working producing total o/p
of 220 MW.
Unit no. V and VII are undergoing renovation and
modernization.
The capacity of plant will be increased to 500 MW
in next 5 years.

Thermal power plant

A generating station which converts heat energy
of coal combustion into electrical energy.

Working principle

LAW OF CONSERVATION OF
ENERGY
Chemical energy of fuel
Heat energy in furnace
Heat energy of medium water
Kinetic energy of turbine rotor
Electromotive force
Electricity generation

Division of a thermal power

Steam generating equipment

Boiler
Boiler furnace
Superheater
Economiser
Air preheater

condenser
It condenses steam at exhaust of
turbine.
It creates very low pressure at the
exhaust of turbine which helps in
converting heat energy of steam into
mechanical energy in prime mover.
The condensed steam can be used
as feed water to the boiler.

turbines
It is used as prime mover to generator.
Three types of turbine are used :
1.HP turbine
2.IP turbine
3.LP turbine

Electrical equipments
Generator : To generate electricity
Transformer : For required voltage
Switch yard : Onward transmission of
powers

Why coal as a fuel

Coal can provide usable energy at a
cost of between 12 to 15 % compared
to oil and natural gas, and coal prices
are relatively stable.
Coal is inherently higher polluting and
carbon intensive than other energy
alternatives. However coal is so
inexpensive that one can spend quite a
bit on pollution control, and still
maintain coals competitive position.

Types of water required

DEMINERALISED WATER : BOILER
SOFTEN WATER : COOLING AND
GENERAL SERVICE
DRINKING WATER : DOMESTIC
PURPOSE
UNTREATED WATER : ASH
HANDLING,COAL HANDLING AND
FIRE FIGHTING

observations
B.T.P.S has a very good working
environment.
B.T.P.S is very sincere about
cleanliness and hygiene.
It has got a Technical training centre
with very good learning environment.
Staff is excellent and supportive and
always ready to help.

conclusion
It is third largest thermal power plant
of Bihar.
It generates 210 MW electricity and
after completion of extension project it
will produce 500 MW electricity.
It is major contributor of electricity to 7
districts of north Bihar.
