Solutions to Recent Building Problems

Recent problems can be solved by using
Floating Column
Transfer Floor
Transfer Beam
Transfer truss
Either RC Structure or Post Tensioned

Floating Column _ _ _

???

The floating column is a vertical member which rest on a

transfer beam or a transfer Floor and doesnt have a
foundation.

Advantages
1. Column free area obtained below.
2.FSI can be managed according to
building Bye-laws.
3.Aesthetic reqm. of Architects
fulfilled.

Floating
Column

Mechanism By which Floating Column(FC)

Transfers the Load

Acts as point load on the beam/Floor and this beam/floor

transfers the load to the columns below it.
As direct Load Path is not available Designed and constructed
with greater care.
FC need Not be treated to carry any EQ forces, It is shared by
the Main columns/shear walls without considering any
contribution from FC.
In design of FC, minimum 25% EQ must be catered in addition
to full gravity forces.

TRANSFER FLOOR/PLATE (TP)

It can be defined as the system that

takes & transmits heavy loads from
above columns or walls acting on its
top and redistribute them to
supporting columns .

P. E . S . C . O . E . A .

Transfer plate/floor are very heavy & thick can reach around 1.0 m to 4.5m in
thickness.
Spacing of columns above a transfer floor is comparatively closer than below it.

Advantages of Transfer Floor

Transfer floors are increasingly applied in design of high-rise
buildings in recent years due to its complex shapes
Fulfilling multifunctional requirements of the buildings.
Provide different architectural arrangements above and below
the transfer structures.

Functional requirements of Transfer floor

The lower zones of the buildings are usually used for

parking,
shopping malls,
assembly halls,
podium gardens or open spaces
for function requirements, while the higher zones
generally accommodate apartments or offices.

Finite Element Method

The finite element method (FEM), is a computational

technique which is used to obtain the solutions of various
boundary value problems in engineering, approximately.
FEM is Useful for problems
with complicated geometries,
loadings,
and
material
properties where analytical
solutions can not be obtained.

Analysis Model

Finite Element Formulation

Discretizations :Member/Model body is divided into an

equivalent system of many smaller bodies or units (finite
elements) interconnected at points common to two or more
elements (nodes or nodal points) and/or boundary lines and/or
surfaces.
Stiffness Matrix :Obtain a set of algebraic equations to solve
for unknown (first)nodal quantity(displacement).

02. Literature Reviews : Paper I

In this paper, the seismic performance of girder transfer floor

member and the plate transfer floor member were discussed.
Based on overall structure calculation of a high rise building, the
seismic design requirements for buildings applying thick transferring
plate have been presented.
They have concluded that, as long as the structures with transfer,
stiffness mutation will happen. The maximum design conversion is
required to control the stiffness mutation, and beam transfer layer
can better mutation stiffness, the thick plate transition, in fact, the
thickness of the plate on the structural displacement change is not
significant.

In this paper, The beam shape of concrete transfer floor is

completely studied.
The study was done on support frame of transfer floor and
temperature cracks' control.
They concludes, transfer beam has the advantage of good
loading-carrying capability function, reliable work, easy &
convenient construction, construction calculation also
comparatively easy.

Literature Reviews : Paper III

In this paper, Nonlinear time and history analysis under

rare earthquake occurrence is carried out to check the
elastic-plastic angular displacement limits and to identify
structural weaknesses in high rise building with transfer floor.
The study was done on support frame of transfer floor and
temperature cracks' control.
They concludes, structural design of high transfer floor is
beyond the requirements of the codes. But the Calculation
results meet the requirement of related codes.
the destruction order of plastic hinges and the weak floors or
parts are found under rare earthquake action.

03. Aim & Objectives

My Aim is to study the behavior of multistory buildings with floating

columns imposing on Thick transfer plate under earthquake excitations
In this study analytical models & analysis procedures are to be
developed to assess the seismic performance of a high-rise building
with a transfer plate for which Staad.pro software is going to be used.
Following Results from the behavior of transfer plate will be obtained
in
Punching shear,
Story Drift,
Plate Deflections,
Axial stresses,
Bending stresses,
Per. Stress checks as per codal provisions.
