NUMERICAL METHODS/ANALYSIS

Numerical analysis is the study of algorithms that use numerical approximation (as
opposed to general symbolic manipulations) for the problems of mathematical
analysis.

Numerical analysis continues this long tradition of practical mathematical

calculations. Much like the Babylonian approximation of Square Root of 2, modern
numerical analysis does not seek exact answers, because exact answers are often
impossible to obtain in practice. Instead, much of numerical analysis is concerned
with obtaining approximate solutions while maintaining reasonable bounds on errors.

Numerical analysis naturally finds applications in all fields of engineering and the
physical sciences, but in the 21stcentury also the life sciences and even the arts
have adopted elements of scientific computations. Ordinary differential equations
appear in celestial mechanics (planets, stars and galaxies); numerical linear algebra
is important for data analysis; stochastic differential equations and Markov chains
are essential in simulating living cells for medicine and biology.

Before the advent of modern computers numerical methods often depended on hand
interpolation in large printed tables. Since the mid 20th century, computers
calculate the required functions instead. These same interpolation formulas
nevertheless continue to be used as part of the software algorithms for solving
differential equations.

AREAS OF STUDY UNDER NUMERICAL METHODS

Computing values of functions (Special Functions, Experiments, Mathematical Modelling)

Interpolation, Extrapolation, and Regression (Curve Fitting)

Solving equations and Systems of equations (Non-Linear or Simultaneous Linear Equations)

Solving eigenvalue or singular value problems (Matrices)

Optimization (LPP or Operational Research Problems)

Evaluating derivates and integrals (Differentiation and Integration)

Differential equations (ODEs and PDEs)

Fast Fourier Transforms

POPULAR NUMERICAL COMPUTING

APPLICATIONS/SOFTWARES:

MATLAB, SCILAB, GNU OCTAVE, IT++, PYTHON, MATHEMATICA, Some Spreadsheet Softwares, etc.

MATLAB

MATLAB is the high-level language and interactive environment used by

millions of engineers and scientists worldwide. It lets you explore and
visualize ideas and collaborate across disciplines including signal and
image processing, communications, control systems, and computational
finance.

A proprietary programming language developed by MathWorks, MATLAB

allows matrix manipulations, plotting of functions and data,
implementation of algorithms, creation of user interfaces, and interfacing
with programs written in other languages, including C, C++, Java, Fortran
and Python.

The MATLAB application is built around the MATLAB scripting language.

Common usage of the MATLAB application involves using the Command
Window as an interactive mathematical shell or executing text files
containing MATLAB code

Why NUMERICAL METHODS???

To solve problems that cannot be solved

exactly

To solve problems that are intractable!

Modern numerical analysis does not seek

exact answers, because exact answers are
often impossible to obtain in practice.
Instead, much of numerical analysis is
concerned with obtaining approximate
solutions while maintaining reasonable
bounds on errors.

Numerical (cf. analytical) methods are

extremely powerful problem-solving
tools. (Capable of handling large systems
of equations, non-linearity, complex
geometries, etc.)
