Introduction

Fisheries sector occupies a very important place in

socio
economic
development,
employment
generator and provide nutritious food.

Most importantly it is source of livelihood for a

large section of economical backward population.

It enhance food and nutritional security.

This sector increase the income of fisher and fish

farmer.

Fisheries in Madhya
Pradesh

Bring all kinds of water bodies towards fruitful utilizations in

terms of fisheries.
Practicing good management practices i.e. Application of
scientific knowledge / input.
Increase the fish income of fisher and fish farmer through
productivity enhancement better post harvested facilities and
marketing.

Developmental
Objectives
Promotion

of aquaculture in rural areas.

Sustainable enhancement of fish production in
existing pond and reservoir introducing appropriate
management.
Facilitate production of adequate quantity of quality
seed of cultivable carp species in the private sector in
addition to its own hatcheries and farm.
Promotion of fisheries cooperatives for cooperative
development.
To enhance food and nutritional security.

Critical constraints for

future development of
Production of Quality Seed stocking (input)
freshwater
material.
Feed ingredients and farm made feed
Cost of effective feed.
Availability of technology.
Post harvested facilities and processing.
Marketing

IMC Production
Enhance

fish production, cluster approach by

farming groups among entrepreneurs and
progressive farmer will encouraged to adopt good
aquaculture practices.

COMPOSIT FISH CULTURE

Integrated fish farming

Integrated fish farming is highly suitable for farming

households who own or have access to pond and also
keep livestock animals. With a largest population of
buffalo and cattle in the state, the growth potential of
integrated fish farming is huge

Intervention in villages

Freshwater species
cultured in Madhya
Pradesh
Freshwater Carps IMCs and EMCs variable production
(2-10 t/ha/yr)

Catfish Magur, Pangas, Pabda, etc.

Fresh Water Prawn

Pacu (Piaractus brachipomus) still not cleared by the

Ministry; but widely cultured in many places

Tilapia Cleared by the Ministry; only all male of nile

tilapia or improved hybrids/strains permitted.

Increasing Fish Productivity

Stocking of advance fish fingerling in reservoirs insitu seed rearing at reservoir site and cage culture
activities in reservoir for overall development of
reservoir fish. ex situin earthen pond. In situin
pen and cage culture.
Fish brooders in natural water bodies hence their in
need for introduction of scheme for conservation of
fish such as water bodies

Production & Productivity

Production

levels of 1414 kg /ha Village Ponds &

Reservoir productivity is107 kg/ha/year.
Increases productivity of village ponds 1414 to 3000 &
Reservoir 107 to 135 kg /ha/year.
Small reservoir (1000ha) National productivity 174
and MP 217 kg (Production potential of small reservoir
less then 1000 ha 250 -350kg /ha).
Medium reservoir (1000 to 5000 ha) National 12
Kg/ha/Yr and MP 20.99 Kg. Potential 150-250 kg /ha.
Large Reservoir (5000ha) National 11 and MP 36.37
kg /ha/year. Potential 50-100 kg/ha/Yr .

Financial Assistance For Balanced

Integrated Supplementary Feed
Popularization

of plated feed and important

initiatives to be taken up to enhance feed
based aquaculture for higher production and
encourage intensive fish farming

Small Scale Aquaculture

Among the landholding class the
average size of water bodies is
about 0.1 ha
Water bodies like community
ponds and leased ponds also
small (1-2 ha)
In
future
small
holding
aquaculture to shoulder major
responsibility in fish production

Technology commercialized
from ICAR-CIFA
Improved rohu, Jayanti

Jayanti rohu developed through selective

breeding of Labeo rohita from different
founder populations of North Indian rivers
Improved Jayanti rohu the first genetically
improved fish in India and trialed under
field conditions in different states
Genetic gain of 17 % per generation for
growth trait
Dissemination of improved rohu to
different parts of India under progress.
Annually about 5 crores of seed of this
improved variety are supplied presently
to the sector.
Multiplier hatcheries and the recently
formed National Freshwater fish Brood
bank facility (NFFBB) in Odisha for wider
dissemination
A. hydrophila resistant rohu ready and
undergoing farm trials

Technology ready - Breeding and culture of

diversified species

Other
than
Indian
major carps, breeding
and
culture
technologies
of
diversified groups of
freshwater
species,
such as minor carps,
catfish,
pabda,
freshwater
prawn
(genetically
improved),
climbing perch and
murrel
have
been
developed to ensure

Conclusion & Way Forward

Need to standardize and ensure: SEED, FEED,
DISEASE MANAGEMENT & MARKET
Multiplier unit for genetically improved fish
Broodbank for at least 10 species
Farm made feeds
Broodstock diet
Disease diagnostics and management
Pond management water & soil
Culture technology suiting specific geographical
conditions
Climate & water resilient aquaculture
More production & productivity with less resources

Let us join hands together for enriched health, wealth and safe
environment while developing the aquaculture.
Let Sustainability & Responsibility be the watchwords
