Georgias

Atlantic Ocean
Habitat
What are some examples of living and
nonliving things you might have seen
at the beach?
Georgias coastline is 110 miles long!
Can you estimate how many laps that
would be around the track outside?
4 laps = 1 mile
Georgias
Coast
Barrier Islands

Jekyll Island and St. Simons

Island are two of many barrier
islands along Georgias coast.
The barrier islands are also
known as the Golden Isles.
Infer: Why are the barrier
islands called the Golden
Isles?
Atlantic Ocean Habitat

The Atlantic Ocean is the

saltiest ocean! Do you know how
many oceans there are in the
world?
Atlantic Ocean Habitat

Every year Loggerhead sea turtles

lay their eggs on the beach, but
make their home in the ocean. They
can lay 120 eggs at a time! Wow!
That is why you found them in the
Coastal Habitat as well!
Why would the Atlantic
Ocean habitat be best fit for
this
Loggerheads lay eggs regularly animal?
on Georgias islands such as Jekyll Island.
Like all sea turtles, the loggerhead is completely adapted to life in the
ocean and depends on land only for reproduction (to produce more living
things).
Only the female returns to the beach. When female turtles are 15-30 years
old, they leave the water and dig a nest in the sand on the beach, lay the
eggs, cover the nest, then return to the water.

Marine Life

The Right Whale is

Georgias State Mammal.
They were hunted long ago,
and they were very easy
for whalers to catch. They
floated when killed, and
they held lots of oil and
meat. They were just right
for hunting. Sadly, they
were almost hunted to
extinction.
Why would the Atlantic
Ocean habitat be best
suited for this animal?

Right Whale The right whale is a mammal that

lives in saltwater oceans. It can get as large at 60ft
in length! It feeds on krill, zooplankton, and other
ocean creatures that can sift into its mouth.

Loggerhead Sea Turtles

and Manatees can also
be found in waters off
of Georgias coast!
Both are also
considered endangered. Manatees like to swim
close to the surface,
and so many get killed
or injured by boats.
Sea turtles are caught
in fishing traps and
nets quite often.
A crab also
lives in the
Atlantic Ocean
habitat. It has
a shell and
claws to
protect it from
other animals,
a type of
physical or
structural
adaptation.
What are the features of animals that allow them
to live and thrive in this region of Georgia?
Some have gills to breathe under water or can hold
their breath for a long time.
Can survive in salt water.
Can move quickly underwater to capture food or
escape from predators (fins, flippers, etc.)
Some have webbed feet for moving in water.
Animals communicate underwater with sounds and
movements.
Animals camouflage to avoid detection from
predators or prey.
Why would this habitat be best for
specific plants?

Seaweed
Seaweed is a plant that attaches itself to underwater rocks, coral,
or shells.
It requires a saltwater environment, and water which is clear
enough to allow light through for photosynthesis.
Seaweed
Sea grass
What are the features of plants that allow them
to live and thrive in this region of Georgia?
Deep roots attach to underwater
rocks.
Plants can grow in oceans salt
water.
Some plants have air spaces in
their stems to help hold the plant
up in the water
Plants that can survive totally in
water.
Flexible stems that can withstand
water movement.
How would you describe the
Atlantic Ocean habitat?

The Atlantic Ocean touches the southeast corner of Georgia.

The ocean is the home of the Right Whale during its mating
season. Loggerhead Sea Turtles come ashore on the barrier
islands to lay their eggs. Grays Reef is a national marine
sanctuary located off the coast of Savannah. The Atlantic
Ocean region is rich with wildlife diversity, as it is known as the
armpit of the east coast, meaning that Georgias shoreline is
the innermost pocket of water between Maine and Florida.
Many different plants and animals funnel into the part of the
ocean along the Georgia coast. Some animals in this region
include shrimp, crabs, oysters, right whales, dolphins,
