INTRODUCTION
The first Night Vision Device (NVD) was created during
WORLD WAR II by military scientists .

Night Vision is used to locate an object which is 200 meters

away .

Night Vision Device is used to see in dark , moonless and

cloudy night .

Night Vision Device always show images in hues of green

colour or black and white image .
THE BASICS
In order to understand Night Vision , it is important to
understand about light.

Human eyes are able to see the rays of wavelength range from
390 nm to 700 nm , that is wavelength of ultraviolet rays.

Infrared rays have wavelength more than 700 nm which are

not visible to human eyes.

Brief description about infrared rays
Infrared Rays
There are two types of infrared rays.
1. Near Infrared
It is nearer to the visible light having wavelength from
700 nm to 1400 nm.

2. Far Infrared
It is away from visible light having wavelength from 800
nm to 1500 nm.

Principle of operation of NVD
The infrared reflection of
objects is captured and
converted into a digital signal
by a Charge Coupled Device
(CCD).

The digital signal from CCD is

routed to the image processor
that translate it into a format
that can be viewed in black and
white or green coloured image
on the screen in vehicle as Fig.: IR Image
shown in fig.1
Working of NVD
The operation of NVD is called as thermal imaging.

It is operated by the infrared rays which are emitted as heat by the

objects.

NVD converts thermal radiation or heat into electrical signal and then in
an image visible to human eyes.

Heat radiation is converted into electrical signal by using optics sensor,

infrared detector and signal processor.

The higher the temperature then the image obtained on the screen is
more soft and clear.
Contd
Control system gives warning when it detects any object on
path.

NVD doesnt have colour information so it gives only black

and white image.

Latest generation is using green coloured display because

green colour is most sensitive for human eyes.

Warning Time

Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between foreground

and background image.
Applications of NVD

Hidden object detection
Entertainment

This technology is used in BMW series.

Night Vision Equipments
Conclusion
The Night vision Technology can be used to avoid
accidents during dark night.
This technology is generally helpful in increasing

distance detection and accuracy.

It can be useful detect the enemy position at night.
