The stories of Iqbal, Craig and Ryan

KIDS CAN BE HEROES TOO!

Life isnt FAIR!!!

 Half the world — nearly three billion

people — live on less than two dollars a
day
 Nearly a billion people entered the 21st
century unable to read a book or sign
their names
 More than 80 billion children are unable
to go to school…most are girls.
 Less than one per cent of what the world
spent every year on weapons was
needed to put every child into school by
the year 2000 and yet it didn't happen.
More statistics…

 According to UNICEF, 30,000 children

die each day due to poverty. And they
“die quietly in some of the poorest
villages on earth, far removed from
the scrutiny and the conscience of the
world. Being meek and weak in life
makes these dying multitudes even
more invisible in death.”
And more….

 What do we
spend
money on??

 How do you
feel about
this?
We could go on all day…

 In armed conflict, 90% of casualties

since 1945 are innocent civilians. ¾
of these are women and children…
right now there are 35 major conflicts
going on around the world today.
 Even in Canada, the land of ‘freedom’,
Saskatchewan, and even Regina,
there are thousands of people who
don’t quite have ‘enough’.
Social Justice Issues in OUR
world…
 Poverty
 No education
 Water
 Child labour
 Gangs
 Wars
 Health issues
 Environmental issues
 And MANY more!

Here are some kids that felt something
was wrong…and acted!
 Iqbal Masihwas a boy from
Pakistan that was sold into
slavery by his family when
he was 4 years old.
 The owner of the carpet
store where he worked
added more costs and
interest to the amount of
money Iqbalsfamily owed
him.
 Eventually , thanks to the
government outlawing child
labour, Iqbal freed himself ,
and helped save hundreds of
other children.
Craig Kielburger

 After reading a story

about Iqbal, Craig
decided he wanted to
do something.
 So he and a few of his
Gr. 7 classmates
started an organization
called ‘Free the
Children’ which gave
awareness about Child
Labour.
 It is still organized by
Free the Children

 Free The Children has built

more than 500 schools around
the world
 Goals: Free young people from
labour exploitation, and free the
idea that young people are
powerless to affect
Ryan HRELJAC

 When Ryan was 6

years old, his teacher
told their class about
the lack of water,
ecspeciallyclean
water in Africa.
 Ryan has raised over
 $800 000 for
communities to have
access to clean water.
This is approximatly
400 wells.
