What is the SCHEFFES test?

It is a statistical test that is used to

make unplanned comparisons,
rather than pre-planned
comparisons, among group means
in an analysis of variance (ANOVA)
experiment.

www.investopedia.com/terms/s/scheffes-test.asp
While Scheffe's test has the
advantage of giving the
experimenter the flexibility
to test any comparisons that
appear interesting, the
drawback of this flexibility
is that the test has very low
statistical power.
www.investopedia.com/terms/s/scheffes-test.asp
The Scheffe' test is customarily
used with unequal sample sizes,
although it could be used with
equal sample sizes.
The critical value for the
Scheffe' test is the degrees of
freedom for the between
variance times the critical value
for the one-way ANOVA. This
simplifies to be: http://people.richland.edu/james/lecture/m170/ch13-dif.html
CV = (k-1) F(k-1,N-k,alpha)
The test statistic is a little
bit harder to compute. Pure
mathematicians will argue
that this shouldn't be called
F because it doesn't have an
F distribution (it's the
degrees of freedom times
an F).

Reject H0 if the test statistic
is greater than the critical
value. Note, this is a right tail
test. If there is no difference
between the means, the
numerator will be close to
zero, and so performing a left
tail test wouldn't show
anything.

The Scheff Test

In order to conduct the

Scheff test, one must
compare the means two at a
time, using all possible
combinations of means.

scheffe-test-and-the-tukey-test.pdf
For example, if
there are three
means,
the following
comparisons must be
done:

scheffe-test-and-the-tukey-test.pdf
X1 versus X2

X1 versus X3

X2 versus X3

Where..
Xi and Xj
are the means of the
samples being compared,
ni and nj
are
the respective sample sizes, and
the s2w
within-group variance is s2w.

To find the critical value F of the
Scheffes Test

F=(k-1)(CV)
