INTERNSHIP AT SHADES
ARCHITECTURAL ASSOCIATES
BRIEF OVERVIEW

I visited the site from June 1-20 .The work which I saw
during that time are
Column casting on 8th floor
Roof slab casting on the 7th floor
Masonry works on the 5th floor
Plastering work on the 3rd floor
SALIENT FEATURES OF THE PROJECT

The site in which I did my internship is a 10 storey apartment project which

has 36 apartments out of which 27 apartments are 3-BHK each of super built
up area of 1700 sq.ft and 9 apartments are 2-BHK each of super built up area
of 1500 sq.ft. Salient features of the project are
Car parking facilities
Sewage treatment plant with recycling of effluent
Rain water harvesting.
Secured gated complex with boundary wall
Lift facilities
SUB STRUCTURE
1) FOUNDATION
Though the foundation supports a building, the earth is the
ultimate support. The foundation is a system comprising wall,
footing and soil. The prime purpose of an efficient structural
foundation system is to transmit the building load is the directly to
the soil without exceeding the bearing capacity of the soil.

FOUNDATION SYSTEM AT THE SITE:- Hard strata was

found about 4 m from the ground surface, so the depth of the
foundation from the ground surface is about 4 m. Independent
rectangle shaped sloped footing is used
) The size of the footing is 240x210 cm
) M25 concrete is used
2)PLINTH BEAM
Plinth beam is the horizontal cement beam across the house
periphery laid on top of the foundation.

PURPOSE
Prevent leaking of water into foundation
Provides support for walls
Holds house together.
SUPER STRUCTURE

1)FORMWORK
Formwork is a mould or die used to support and shape the concrete until it
attains sufficient to carry its own weight. The formwork holds the
concrete until it hardens to required shape and size.

SPECIFICATION OF FORMWORK AND CONCRETING IN THE

SITE
Steel formwork is used
Roof slab is of thickness 12mm
8mm Fe 415 steel is used as reinforcement
M20 concrete mix is used for the concreting
2)COLUMN CONSTRUCTION WORK
RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) column is a structural member of RCC
frame structured building. It's a vertical member which transfers loads from
slab and beam directly to subsequent soil.

Specification of column at the site:- 1)Column size 60x25cm

2)Vertical reinforcement bars:8 nos.,20
mm dia
3) Stirrups :8mm dia bars with 140mm
spacing
3)MASONRY WORKS

Masonry is used to indicate art of building a structure in either stones or

bricks. The masonry wall is built of individual blocks of materials such as
stones, bricks, concrete, hollow blocks, cellular concrete and late rite.
Usually horizontal courses are cemented together with some form of mortar.

In the site concrete blocks of size 30x20x15cm is used.

Thickness of wall is 15cm.
1:5 cement mortar is used.
FINISHING WORKS

PLASTERING:-
Cement plastering is commonly used as ideal coating for external and internal
surface of wall. Cement plaster is usually applied in a single coat or double
coat. Double coat plaster is applied where thickness of plaster is required to
be more than 15 mm or when it is required to get a very fine finish. The
process of applying a double coat cement plaster on wall surface consists of
the following 4 steps
Step-1-Preparation of surface for plastering
Step-2-Grout work for plaster
Step-3-Applying first coat (or under coat or rendering coat)
Step-4-Applying second coat (or finishing coat or fine coat)
QUALITY CONTROL TEST

SLUMP TEST:-Slump test is used to check the workability of concrete.

Slump test have some apparatus-
1. Mould- Bottom dia 20cm & upper dia 10cm Height 30cm
2. Tamping rod 16mm dia & length 60cm
In slump test material have filled in 4 layer. Each Layer should be Tamped 25 Times, by the
tamping rod ,then the top of the concrete surface is struck off so that the cone is
completely full of concrete. Then the cone or mould is removed from concrete
immediately by raising it slowly and carefully in a vertical direction . This allows the
concrete to subside. This subsidence is referred as SLUMP of concrete. The difference in
level between the height of the cone and that of the highest point of subsided concrete is
measured. this difference in height is taken as slump of the concrete
For normal RCC work the slump should be between 80 to 150 mm
COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TEST
Size of cube used to check compressive strength of concrete :15cm15cm
15cm
After 28 days curing of cube , check the strength in compression machine.
