Grade Level: First Grade
Lesson Title: Getting to Know Ants
Time Needed: 30 min

Standard: RI 1.7 Use the illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas.
Objectives: The student will be able to identify the parts of an ant.
Activity:
1) Read National Geographic Kids Ants book out loud to students. (approx. 5 min)
2) Re-read the pages that describe the parts of the ant, and show them the picture(s)
from the book and online. (approx. 1-2 min)
3) Have students turn to a partner and answer questions with each other about the
text and picture (While pointing to antenna ask what is this part of the ant called?)
4) Randomly call on one or two students to supply an answer.
5) Repeat 4 for the other parts of the ant. (steps 3-5 approx. 5 min.)
6) Project basic drawing of an ant and repeat questioning. As students supply the
names of the parts of the ant label the picture on the board. (approx. 3 min.)
7) Have students go back to their seats and pass out a copy of the ant drawing to each
student to label. (Remaining time)

Check for Understanding: The student will be able to use the class created diagram of
the parts of an ant to label their own diagram of an ant.
