Gnosticism

Gabriella Karanikos
Olivia Solverson
Katie Lynch
Starting date
It originated between 1-300 AD
Still exists today, although not as prominent
Definition
Gnostics believe that God did not
actually "create" anything
He brought from himself everything
in existence
But then, Sophia (Wisdom), created
a flawed and sinful consciousness
named Demiurgos
Demiurgos formed God's essence
into human beings in his own image,
which is why we are flawed
Why was it wrong? How does the heresy
disagree with the Church teaching
The Church teaches that God
created everything in his image,
which is perfect
The Church teaches that we are
flawed because of the fall of
humanity and sinnot because of a
flawed creator
Council that fought against it
Council of Nicaea
Formally denounced Gnosticism
Also established that the Trinity is three
distinct persons in one
Jesus is fully human and fully divine
(which Gnosticism doesnt believe)
How was the heresy defeated
Diminished after Council of Nicaea, but still in existence
Gnostic Gospels exist
Book about Gnosticism today recently published
The Hidden Messages of Jesus: How the Gnostic Gospels Change
Christianity by Larry A. Angus
