1. INTRODUCTION
Building electrical services is inevitable
in all dwelling places, since it promotes;
safety, comfort and efficiency.
A proposed office Block for UNHCR was
used to apply the basic concepts and or
principles of building electrical services
This was used to facilitate the
establishment of: lighting system,
electrical power system
distribution and air conditioning
system in the office block.

1. INTRODUCTION
The group (Next Level) obtained an
Architectural drawing for the proposed
office Block for UNHCR Moroto regional
office; for which we went on to produce
a detailed building electrical services
design and layouts.
The Architectural drawing which was
developed by Arch. Adrian Rutaro and
received from Mr. Ronald Athiyo;
composed of several offices typical to an
Administration block i.e. Offices, 5
2. OBJECTIVES
Main objective of the Assignment
The main objective of the assignment
was to carry out a building electrical
services design and analysis inclusive of
the layouts.
Specific objectives of the
Assignment
The specific objectives were to produce:
Lighting layout
Small power layout

3. SCOPE OF THE ASSIGNMENT
Time scope
The assignment was carried out starting
from 20th February to 11th March, 2017.
Content scope
The assignment was limited to the
building electrical services design,
analysis and drawings.
Geographical scope
This assignment was limited to proposed
office Block for UNHCR in Moroto District.

4. METHODOLOGY CONTD
Electrical design
This was based on the demand and utilisation
rate of the electrical energy by the building
occupants.
The main design parameters included:
Type of lighting (lamps)
Number of light required in each room
Circuit breaker rating (Amperage)
Cable sizes
Type of lighting
The type of lighting for every room was from
the LED Lighting product catalogue by TRONIC

4. METHODOLOGY CONTD
Number
of lighting
In the determination of number of lights in a
room of the building, we used the Lumen
method of design.

Supply
The main power supply was chosen to be
three phase because of:
Higher Rating
Constant Power
Power Transmission Economics
Superiority of 3 Phase Induction Motors

cable sizing (Main supply)
Using the allowance for voltage drop of 3%,
the dimensions of the conductor area are in
Circular Mil (CM)
I = 199.691A L = 30Ft and = 11.2
Conductor size =
= 77,475.99CM
= 77,475.99 * 0.0005067
= 39.25mm2
We used a 50mm2 cable since its the
closest cable size to the above value.

7. CONCLUSIONS
The activity was conducted with several
assumptions made, however, the results
obtained are realistic based of the current
design practice.
To the site electrical subcontractor, we
would advise adherence to the
specifications and close supervision of
electrical work by the clerk of works.
We would recommend that maintenance be
done on the electrical system once put in
use.
Furthermore, we would also recommend 25
6. CHALLENGES
The task assigned to us could not be done
without the input of a professional.
Besides that ethnicity distribution of the
group members was not easy to source.
