1 What is a PLC ?

Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is a digital computer used for the

automation of various electro-mechanical processes in
industries. PLC consists of a microprocessor which is programmed using
the computer language.

The program is written on a computer and is downloaded to the PLC via

cable. These loaded programs are stored in non volatile memory of the
PLC.

2 Why industry use PLC ?
1. Very fast
2. Easy to change logic i.e. flexibility
3. Reliable due to absence of moving parts
4. Low power consumption
5. Easy maintenance due to modular assembly
6. Facilities in fault finding and diagnostic
7. Capable of handling of very complicated logic operations
8. Good documentation facilities
9. Easy to couple with the process computers
10. Analog signal handling and close loop control programming
11. Counter, timer and comparator can be programmed
12. Ease operator interface due to colourographic and advisory system

4 Introduction (Cont.)
There are two types of I/O combined modules:
Module using same I/O numbers for input and output.Since same number is
used for input and output, the I/O numbers to be used can be saved.
Module using sequential I/O numbers for input and output Since I/O
assignments are the same for A series, it is useful when replacing modules
from those of A series.
