Risk Based Inspection
Risk Based Inspection for fixed and linear assets

Meridiums RBI approach is compliant with American Petroleum Institute (API) standards and provides the
ability to assess the probability and consequences of failure to optimize inspection rigor based on overall
risk. The visual surveillance and inspection of both fixed and linear assets is a critical element in assessing
the current condition of the asset and avoiding equipment failures. RBI can be seamlessly integrated into
inspection management and maintenance programs. RBI is completely integrated with the Meridium
Enterprise APM suite of solutions. The associated work process follows API standards and Recognized and
Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP). APM Mechanical Integrity is the only solution
that provides an approach-agnostic RBI capability, and is the only software solution that has been certified
to the 3rd edition of API-RP 581 by Trinity Bridge Digital.
Corrosion Engineering is the foundational element within Meridiums RBI approach. The key steps in this
phase include:
Definition of corrosion loops
Assignment of potential degradation mechanisms (PDM)
Defining the integrity operating windows (IOWs) for the PDMs effecting the asset
Management of equipment design and process data
Risk Assessment leverages the data captured from the corrosion engineering process as well as the current
and past results of inspections and thickness monitoring programs to build integrity assurance. IOWs are
established using relevant information from process historians and Enterprise Asset Management (EAM)
systems.
Inspection Management
Inspection planning, execution, and analysis for fixed and linear assets
Organizations apply continuous efforts to help eliminate equipment failures that result in unplanned downtime, reduced
production rates, and safety and environmental incidents that hurt the organizations reputation and brand. In addition,
many inspection programs are mandated by regulatory agencies with the power to apply significant penalties for non-
compliance. Meridiums Inspection Management capability provides the capability to drive large-scale inspection
programs and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local requirements including the API standards. Inspection
Management allows asset owners and operators to manage inspection plans, document the condition of an asset, and
track inspection recommendations to closure from a single source. Inspection Management provides a complete view of
the inspection program through integrations with Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) systems and other Meridium
APM solutions.
Inspection Planning defines the overall inspection strategy for an asset, the objective of the strategy, and the
frequency of inspections, as well as the resources responsible for successful execution of the inspections. Inspection
Scope identifies the asset and all its sub-components that should be inspected as well as the inspection methods to be
used.
Inspection Workflow Management includes tools for review, approval, enhancements, record locking, and publishing
of all inspections, as required by the organizationsprocesses and practices. One of the differentiator for Meridium
inspection management is the ability to capture the inspection confidence/effectiveness for the potential degradation
mechanisms. Inspection Alerts drive visibility of the inspection programs with e-mail notifications to inspectors,
supervisors, compliance managers, and others as defined conditions arise.
Inspector Qualifications and Inspection Results are part of legal documentation and the associated certifications are
stored within the application when inspections are performed. Inspection results and associated documentation are
formatted for viewing or printing as Inspection Reports.
Thickness Monitoring
Thickness measurement and analysis for fixed and linear assets
Effective thickness monitoring [measurement] activities are an essential component of a Mechanical Integrity program. They help
eliminate equipment failures that result in unplanned downtime, reduced production rates, and safety and environmental
incidents that hurt the organizations reputation and brand. Meridiums Thickness Monitoring capability provides the capability to
manage large-scale corrosion and thickness measurement programs for stationary equipment such as pipelines, piping, vessels,
exchangers, tanks, boilers, etc. Key elements of Thickness Monitoring include the ability to calculate the minimum thickness
required to safely operate the equipment, thickness measurement data management, and corrosion rate analysis, as well as
next-inspection and retirement- date calculations. These calculated values can be seamlessly integrated back into the
EAM/CMMS systems and other Meridium Enterprise APM solutions.
Thickness Monitoring Planning defines the overall thickness monitoring strategy for an asset, including the calculation
methods, default inspection intervals, and minimum corrosion rates, as well as the resources responsible for successful
execution of monitoring inspections.
Corrosion Analysis provides comprehensive drill-down to the measurement locations for visibility into corrosion rate details and
trends, current findings, and calculated next inspection date.
Pressure Minimum Thickness Calculator evaluates the minimum wall thickness of an asset and, combined with current
corrosion rates, determines the estimated remaining life and projected retirement date for the asset.
Thickness Measurement Location Management governs thickness measurement locations assigned to assets, including
information about sequence, location, design attributes and status. This provides quick identification of potential issues within the
thickness monitoring program.
Half-Life Charts and Measurement Trends provide visibility to the measurement data over time, along with the option to view
the controlling corrosion rate associated with the thickness measurement location. Meridium Thickness Monitoring offers
seamless integration with many UT field measurement devices such as those manufactured by GE and Olympus. Thickness
inspection results and associated documentation are formatted for viewing or printing capability.
Mobile Inspections
The surveillance of equipment condition is critical for the detection and
prevention of equipment failures and ensuing unplanned downtime.
Mobile inspections enable operators and inspectors to capture real-time
data electronically, in the field, and allow those who come in contact with
equipment on a daily basis to have a direct and immediate impact of the
reliability of that equipment.
Meridiums APM Mechanical Integrity solution drives the effective and safe
risk management of fixed and linear assets with criticality and risk rankings,
effective inspection planning, compliance management and dynamic
integrity and risk reviews based on real-time field data. The effective use of
these tools in conjunction with a comprehensive APM initiative improves
safety, containment reliability and environmental compliance.
